    Hi everyone

I have been asked by a couple of people what a premium domain is. Well, I have decided to compile this article and post it here on DP. Some may agree with me and others may not, but these are the guidelines, according to me, on identifying a real premium domain name.

In short, a premium domain name is a name that can be used to launch a profitable business online. These domain names have a certain set characteristics that make them more valuable and more expensive than just any other domain name.

The following characteristics will define a premium domain name:

    1. A Commercial Domain: The premium domain name is typically a commercial domain. Almost all premium domain names will be used to conduct business on.

    2. An Original Name: The premium domain is an original domain name. The premium domain must not be easily confused with another domain.

    3. A Short and Memorable Domain: A premium domain is a short and memorable domain. Customers must be able to access the website without any problems when typing it into a browser.

    4. A Meaningful Domain: A premium domain is generally a domain with a specific meaning. If two words are used to make out a domain name, the words must be used correctly in order to provide accurate meaning to the domain.

    5. A TLD Extension: A domain name can be premium in any extension, but premium domains in the .com, .net and .org extensions are far more valuable than any other domain extensions. A premium .com domain will have the highest value.

    6. Spelling: A premium domain name must be spelt correctly. Typos in domain names will remove the premium status of the domain name.

    7. Hyphens and Numbers: The premium domain name will not consist of any hyphens or numbers in the domain. Domains with hyphens or numbers will lose its premium status.

    8. No Infringements: A premium domain name should be generic. The term ‘Generic’ refers to common dictionary words. The domain name should not infringe on the trademark of others. As example, a domain consisting of the terms ipad, blackberry, google, yahoo will no longer be considered premium domains.

    9. Length: The shorter the domain, the higher its value will be. The golden rule, however, is that a premium domain will not consist of more than 3 words combined.

    10. Stats: A premium domain will already receive traffic before it is listed in search engines. This traffic will be called Type-In traffic. This happens when a person, who needs information on cars, opens his or her browser and type www.cars.com in the browser – without conducting a search on search engines.

    11. Market: There must exist a large market for the premium domain name.

Here are some examples of premium domain names:

    finance.com, sex.com, business.com, accountants.com, cars.com, boats.com, etc.

What about non-premium domains that were turned into premium domains?

There are many examples of just normal domain names that were turned into premium domain names with the correct marketing and branding. Turning a non-premium domain name into a premium domain is very possible.

    Here are some examples:

    Google.com, Yahoo.com, FaceBook.com, Youtube.com, Baidu.com, Wikipedia.com, Twitter.com, Blogspot.com, Linkedin.com, etc.

Thanks Rian for the help understanding premium domains. I would also like to mention important metric such as keyword search volume that adds to the value of a domain name.
