You write an article and place a few links to your site in the author's bio. Then you submit your article to several different article directories. These directories publish your article, so you recieve links back to your site from your author's bio.

Also most article directories allow website publishers to use the articles from the directory and republish them to their site. So for example a website publisher may go to the article directory to find an article to post on their site. They then copy your article (including you author bio & backlinks) and post it to their site. So now you are receiving not only links from the article directory, but also from the publishers that post your article on their sites.

article submission had nothing to do with link bait. Link bait comes from your site...

it's not just the authors bio. you can embed links in your article, so that they are relevant.

see, for example, this article that i just wrote: Crocs Footwear

that one is probably not the BEST example, as it is more advertorial than informative. but it's my article website so i make the rules ;)

I used to use these regularly but personally I found them a waste of time. I create 500 unique articles of very high quality and posted them wherever possible, but got very little traffic even 12 months on. I get more traffic from blogging which takes less time.

I think article submissions are not effective as say, 3 years ago.

Now there is just a TON of crappy articles, which nobody reads, and being submitted day in and day out to the article directories.

How effective do you think it's going to be?

personally I think it's had it's day. The main reason people keep promoting it is because they earn lots of money from posting advertising at the side of your hard worked articles. If I was to use one though it would be ezinearticles. If you have a highly specialised market like Printing, I think it can be a little more effective but don't bother you are using it for SEO, or make money online aspects there's too much already

it's true that article directories are saturated, but that doesn't mean that truly good articles are not going to have a positive effect and work for you.

you just need to ensure good content with the right keywords and, such is the nature of SE's, theoretically you can't fail

submit a blog post, but make sure it reads like an article. it's a good idea to change bits here and there to make it more unique - you might devalue your blog post

i think most article directories are past their prime. You may get some good traffic the first few days after you post but it'll drop sharply as you fall of the latest posts page. If you article is niche and good quality it may be a worthwhile effort.
