You write an article on an established site. You will thus get a backlink which has more value than a directory link. At least that is how it should be in theory.
Many of the article directories have what is called a resource or bio box. This is where the author can put info about himself. Your can place links back to your site in that box. Then when your article gets read people can go to your site for more info. Stavra
Here's the jist of it in my opinion: People on the internet are searching for information. They want it short, sweet, to the point, and right now. Articles exist to help people with that. Now as for promoting your site, it helps you in many ways: In your resource box, you get to promote your site. Instant 1-way link and free advertisement. Writing articles can brand your name as an authority in your field. When ezines publishers, bloggers, or anyone else takes your article to place it on their site for their visitors, they're obligated to put your resource box, and your links. More free advertising and link building. Your link can spread like a virus this way. All this link building helps your search engine rankings as well. So yeah, this is why article marketing is my prime form of advertising.
You write an article about a keyword. You put your URL in the resource box which is the last segment of your article. You submit the article to a high PR article directory. People take your article to publish and you get exposure and if they have a high PR, you gain more quality backlinks from high ranking on SE.
If my article is published on multiple websites will Google count all the backlinks even though the articles are duplicates?
