Let's say I submit one article to hundreds of article directories. Obviously all but a few will end up in Google's supplemental index. But would the links from all of them count as valuable links to my landing page? Or in other words, if I go through the trouble of spinning one article to a few hundred versions and submit each one to a different directory, in which case there will probably be more than just a few that get ranked in Google, would the links from those ranked articles be any more valuable than if they were in the supplemental index?
article directory submission not only gives you backlinks but traffic as well which can be very valuable. there is nothing wrong submitting one article to multiple article directories. not all of them will get indexed and over time some might get deindexed due to duplicate content, but you will still be left will good number of indexed pages depending on how many article directories you submit to. since you cannot get penalized for duplicate content on 3rd party sites, no worries on submitting one article to multiple directories therefore. if you can spin the articles around, then by all means do that. its better to spin and submit if possible. however, manual spin is the best way to do it. most of the tools will make junk outputs on automated spins which will make your article not fit for human reading and google will pick up on that as well.
The sites that the automated software submit to usually have zero or a very low PR, but a few of them are valuable. I have managed to get auto submitted sites onto front page! Still I think there a good way of building LOTS of relevant links quickly, but you need to balance it by getting some high PR links as well.
Better you spin your article first before submission. And please also spin your article title too along with article body.

Use Google Suggest to find longer tail searches relevant to your niche. Create a useful article based around that subject. Then as mentioned above you'll get traffic to the article as well as a link. EzineArticles is the primary objective imo.

I do think that submitting articles to various article directories is a good idea, especially if you're taking the time to spin it. To me, however I'd rather spend the time submitting to the top 5-10 directories and then use a service like Isnare or Free Traffic System to syndicate it further in order to save time that can be better used elsewhere.
If you are talking about duplicate content issue, then yes, it is for sure, even submitting to 5-10 directories is worthless, just one article site is more than enough, the rest all gets counted as duplicate content, and further what is the use of syndication if that is also counted as duplicate, well if you are mentioning of traffic from those syndicated content, well most of those syndications go into autoblogs set up only for the purpose of syndication, traffic from them nada!

I cannot tell you how many times I've submitted an article to EZA for a competitive keyword only to see that article ranking in the top 10 Google results within 24 hours. So yes, I'd say the traffic and backlinks generated from article marketing is definitely worthwhile.
