I think articles beat press releases hands down. Press releases bring in temporary traffic for the most part, while articles will continue to bring in sustained traffic into the forseeable future. I have seen websites I've built with many articles skyrocket in traffic, due to the number of keywords I rank for in the search engines.

 

They both play their own roles, press release is good for traffic and articles directory is good for strong backlinks...

both are too useful for offpage optimization and link building, if u want to knw option among both then i will give weightage to article submission, its best way to get more and more backlinks to your site permanently.
