IMO, article submissions do help in increasing your page rank. But this will take time. You will get a boost in your link popularity within weeks, or even days by submitting articles, and also get a steady stream of traffic to your website(s), but the PR change comes slowly.

Usually, websites / article directories / blogs will put your article on a new page which will take approximately 4 to 5 months before it is assigned some PR. Depending on the PR of those websites, and the PR assigned to the new pages, you will get PR change depending on them.

 

I think writing articles is a powerful technique of free advertising, since it has "viral Marketing" elements. Of course the article should be well written and be relevant.

Idea is very good because it is not just link but also an opportonity to get prequalified visitors.

There are many tools that can submit your article for as little as 1$ a piece;

 

article submission is now long at all. For Pr I don't think it's effective, but for getting back links it is excellent. Most articles get approved, and there is no sureity in directiry submission that directory owner would approve it.

Pagerank is determined purely by the number of links to your site and the pagerank of the pages those links are on, along with the total number of links on that page. The formula for it is floating around somewhere but PR has nothing to do with relevant content.

Great so you increase the pagerank of your sites value drops down. Posting articles to these article directories does just this, it gives you backlinks but the links hold no weight and can sometimes hurt. Now if you select a key (targeted) site and submit the article to that it will work great.

Not to mention duplicate content and that some article websites don't pass PR and the ones that do are worthless. Back in the day (2 years ago) this post would have been true, not so much anymore.
