Article marketing -- when it works and when it fails

I've seen a lot of posts from people who swear by article marketing as a way of building backlinks and providing traffic.

But I've also seen a lot of posts from webmasters who say it isn't that good because people will read the articles on the article sites and then not have a reason to come to their sites. Also, it eats up a huge amount of time for very little benefit.

So why does it work for some people and fail for others? And what's your definition of success or failure once you have published dozens or hundreds of articles?

If you submit your article to many article directories with various "about the author" box you can expect good SEO effect. It is time consuming, especially when you start the article marketing process. You will need to spend a lot of hours by filling the registration forms. To do that as quickly as possible I recommend to use roboform - then you click one button and all fields of the registration form are filled.

You next step will be article submission. There are a few programs which can help you with the submission and also online services which will automatically submit the articles for you.

It is difficult to say if you get some visitors from "about the author" box. From my experience it depends on your niche. The click rate may be less than 1% or more than 50% - it may really differ based on the niche.

Article marketing does work. Regarding "webmasters who say it isn't that good because people will read the articles on the article sites and then not have a reason to come to their sites" - you dont need to put your best efforts on these articles. Reserve your best articles for your site only. May be outsource article marketing.
Articles are the easiest way to generate backlinks.

if you know how to play with the sections of the articles then every visitor who read that article will end up on your homepage, you need to prepare the user to visit your website, build the excitement and curiosity in each paragraph until you point them (users) to your link and homepage.

people submit to article directories for different reasons, some people do it just for the links, while others do it for traffic (in this case you focus only on a few quality directories and if you are smart enough, you will build links for the article url too). those who fail either don't have any clear goal, or are not writing the right articles.

From my experience it also depends on the niche of the product or service which you promote in the resource box. Links to products used by mainstream are more clicked than products used by small % of population.

Article marketing brings some benefits as you get some backlinks from directories, a few visitors and somebody might post your articles on their own blogs.
But you shouldn't expect huge traffic from them and the only reason some people fail is because they post an article and expect 1000's of visitors a day.

I'm mostly pretty happy with the clickthrough rate on my articles. The best performers so far average about 10-15 percent of total page views. But others do less than 10 percent and some don't get any clicks at all.

The traffic and the backlinks are just enough to make it worth my time to write the articles, but they're not blowing my socks off.

I was just curious how everyone else was doing.

different people have different ways of using article marketing. if you are simply using it for backlinks and submitting one article to 800+ directories thinking that that will give you enough backlinks and traffic, then its not gonna work. article marketing is a constant process where you will have to keep submitting article to the top article directories to see some good results. when you write the article, write them in short paragraphs, repeat teh keyword once in evey 100 words or so, use the keyword once in the title, and at the end on your resource box, put an author bio is a way which entices readers to click on your link and visit your site. keep in mind tho that majority of the article directories are junk and will not send any traffic to your site. if you need traffic, then hand submit unique articles to top few directories only.

Hi Everyone, new here and looking forward to learning and sharing ideas about AM! I'm actually new to this forum stuff so please point out any mistakes I might make;-)

I wanted to share a link to a site that gives the top 50 article directories by traffic and page rank. It is updated frequently and might help when deciding which directory you would like to submit to...I've been told you should stay with those who have a PR of 4 and above.

    Hope this helps!
