I have a rather small niche that is never over 100,000 in competition for all of my keywords. I've had people help me with directory submissions and social networking submissions, etc. etc. Also with a few articles. But I now see that ARTICLES have to be BY FAR the most potent way to get boosted up in the SE's. If I get 1 article submitted to 10 of the top (PR4+) directories, this article will SIGNIFICANTLY boost up my rankings for that term, right? Also - I really do not CARE if people ever read my article or syndicate it. In fact, I dont think this will be common. All I really want is my article to be on the sites so the anchor text will boost my rankings.. Is this an ok way to go?
They actually one of the "least" valuable backlinks you can get. Do you want to know the secret to a killer backlink? It's simple; build unique quality rich content. You'll find that backlinks from relevant quality sites are the most powerful backlinks you can achieve. Relevant means the site's "entire" content is on the same subject as yours; of course not duplicated. Quality means it contains a decent or higher Pagerank and a good amount of backlinks itself.
If you take into consider the definition of relevant and quality you'll see what I wrote above is "common sense".
Well my site is in a tiny niche that is never about 100k competition for keywords. I want to dominate, and I am #1 with one phrase and am increasing with other phrases. I just want to know the best way to get to the top ASAP. I have directory submissions, some blog commenting, etc. Are articles something I should use too? I can't see any relevant sites EVER linking to my site as if they WERE relevant they'd be my competition.
Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I think most of the time you only get the link from the ezine. If another site does re-post you content they put a "no follow" on the link so if doesn't take juice away for their site. Right?

I have to put it into perspective. Since your niche is small and theres not much competition, what you want to do is BECOME the authority website in your niche...not submit articles to them! An article directory backlink can be extremely powerful. You just have to look at it from the perspective of a true article marketer. That single backlink can easily turn into hundreds of backlinks on relavent (per definition abve) niche websites if you submit it to the right directory...and they can be on those sites in a matter of hours via RSS. It can be picked up and published in an ezine and it can easily be ranked on the first page of Google by piggybacking on the power of the article directory's search engine influence. Plus, at the same time your article is being scattered about the internet, you are building your popularity and credibility, gaining trust in your prospects, building your brand name, increasing the longevity of your website traffic, increasing your SERPs rankings and much more. From what you say about your niche, in your case I would MUCH rather submit an article to a well established article directory (or more than one) than a single relavent quality website. I can tell you first hand that if nofollow tags are found by the article directories, they will be banned from receiving future RSS feeds. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, though. Respectfully, Allen Graves
What if you had a choice between a bunch of article sites with your links or a bunch of the similar nich sites with your links which would you pick? Hopefully, you pick the niche site linking to you.
I would not submit my article to a bunch of article directories. I would submit them to the RIGHT article directories. This will result in free distribution to literally hundreds of niche websites plus all of the other advantages I mentioned in my previous post. With a little imagination and research, there is a hidden gem in the above paragraph! - Allen Graves
You should care the people who viewed or read your article because they are the one who makes the PR of your article or blog. And if they live a comment to your article and asking some questions, of course you should interact with them so that you can gain more traffic.
I don't see how article directories are better than web directories. PR is important and link popularity. I reached top Google SERP's without them. But I did have high PR backlinks though.
