Articles can be effective as long as they are original. This sounds obvious but for your article to be taken seriously it does need to be well researched and offer good information. I know from my own experience when researching different subjects on the net, a number of times an article in EzineArticles comes up on the first page but after clicking on it I read the first couple of sentences and move on as the article lacks substance. It is obvious the writer is purely submitting the article to try and get backlinks or traffic, not also trying to offer the reader something valuable. So the content is merely fluff, or a re-write of generalities they read in other people's articles. I've wasted so much time clicking on 'fluff' articles even from EzineArticles, I now tend to click on other links on a top results page and shy away from articledirectories, unless the headline is absolutely compelling.

I think PROPER article marketing is effective, however spammy / re-spun garbage will do more harm then good in the long run
