Article Marketing - Duplicate Content Q!

I’ve heard that duplicate content can hurt your SEO rankings. But I’m writing fresh original articles and distributing them via article directories, ezines, etc.

I’m thinking of sending out one version of my articles, and having another version on my blog. The question is: How much difference should there be? Is a different title enough? Is a different first paragraph enough? Or what?

No, the articles do not need to be re-written. Duplicate content applies only to sites powered by RSS feeds in order to preven the enourmous amount of spam Google received from them.

I'm getting some very different info on this, I'm doing some research...

Some say it's OK, you won't be penalised, just that you won't show up. For example my most popular article on Google, isn't showing up. My site doesn't rank on google for my own article! Instead the top ranking one would an article directory where I've submitted my article to. The thing is, is that a good or bad thing? As there is a link back to my site underneath it?

So what exactly is it? The official google blog also states that it's OK to syndicate your content...I'm confused!

I buy a lot of PLR products and I still have to pay someone to rewrite the articles. They usually change it about 50%-60%.

Having the same material on multiple sites can trigger dup content penalty. The two should be different up to 70%.

Yes, you will not be penalized by Google. They will simply throw your article into their supplemental index and it will never be seen again. Basically, it's a waste. Will you get a link back...sure. But if Google never crawls those pages, does it really matter?

Well, here's my take on avoiding duplicate content.

I write an article, and post that article on my blog before distributing it. Then I ping my blog, wait about a day or so. And then I rewrite the article (I've read changing 30% is good), so I change roughly that. I have a free service that does this, but there is a good amount of manual labor involved so that the article is readable (can't just throw an article in a program and poof, new article). Anyway this way I have a unique version of an article for every directory I submit to.

but if i don't care about ranking for that article, if i just want to rank well for the overall site, does it matter? Since I'm getting links from a PR6 website...my overall should go up right?

You're not getting links from a PR6 site...you are getting links from a page (one of millions) that is attached to a PR6 website like ezinearticles. I wouldn't focus too much on the link quality from the article directory, instead, I would focus on writing a good article that can be picked up by another site and published with your link on it.
