Article directory success story?

Does anyone have an article directory success story to tell?

I have a regular link directory here that's been doing fine for almost five years now. Since I've upgraded it to PHPLD3 it now has an article submission feature but this particular part failed to get any traction in a year or so it's been there. In fact, many people confuse article submission and link submission and it looks more like a nuisance to me rather than a valid part of a business plan for a directory.

So, how do you guys use articles in your directory?

Is it better to have a separate directory site or at least a section of a site just for the articles? The way it works with PHPLD out of the box is the articles are kinda mixed in with links (shown on same pages) - maybe people don't even realize they can submit articles there?
Do you promote/market it to a different crowd?
Are there useful PHPLD template tricks/plugins that could help making articles more prominent?

Anyways, if you can share any advice concerning the use of articles in directories, I'd appreciate your input!

I would recommend signing up for an article submission services and receive articles from them till you get a word out and start getting direct submissions. Also you can target your existing customers and maybe get them signed up for article directory as well.
