you can learn from your own experience or you can learn from the experiences of others.

its definitely less costly and less painful to learn from the mistakes of others.

Never underestimate help from a more experienced person.

and how can you accomplish ANYTHING significant without a plan...

yet...so many people avoid both! and why?

I thought that it's another pitch but I was wrong. That was great information. Thanks for this.

I think the mentor part is the trickiest. How do you know that your mentor is the right one? Wouldn't that be wasted time? Or we just have to go through the trial and error period until such time we found the perfect mentor.

    great question.

    1) thing to look for in a mentor is successful experience in the area you are trying to learn

Are they DOING, or have THEY DONE what you aspire to do? if not, forget them.

Also are they willing to share info...do you get something out of even the little conversations, or is everything a mystery? if they aren't free with info or have an overall "everyone wants to steal my ideas" conspiricy theory type attitude...forget them

    2) Mentors don't charge, but coaches do..so if your looking at a coach, find out if htey have HELPED OTHER PEOPLE. mentors are not always coaches, but coaches have to be mentors.

A coach has to teach HOW...a mentor just has to show how. The difference is the ability to train someone else..which is not the same as showing.

you might be able to do a backwards somersault, but that doesnt mean you can safely teach someone else to do it also.

    Excellent post!

As a longtime offline entrepreneur (music intruction studio) who has become an online internet marketer and HomeBiz/MLM coach and mentor I couldn't agree more with your 4 key points. It seems to me that no matter what the activity, there are just still some folks that seem to think they can or should excel at something new without having to do any or very little work (or more importantly, the right kind of work).

They'll send hours doing piddly unproductive things because it's easier than stretching beyond their comfort zone where they are challenged a bit by learning new things and becoming what they say they want to become/do.

Your list of which things can be completed successfully with quality and without a written plan (College Degree, Building A House, Starting A Business, Retirement, A Bus Route, An Airplane Flight Path) made me laugh out loud. Not only have I used similar analogies with my music students and people I mentor, but I have actually done all of them so I know first hand that planning for success is key.

And thank you for doing a follow up of what to look for in a mentor/coach AND what someone has to offer the mentor/coach they seek. Every compliment I've ever gotten on my teaching & mentoring skills I make sure to mention that my "genius" and ability comes from great mentors, teachers and resources I've had the fortune to learn from. I also make it known that my mentors and teachers set a very high standard and that I do as well. I tell them that if they don't put in the time to learn "xyz" I will fire them. Gets their attention right away and those prone to slacking shape up (and usually become some of the best players :) ).

Another suggestion for those looking for a business coach/mentor (or any other activity), you can narrow the field by noticing how someone goes about doing things. I find that people who post replies with lots of affiliate links that say "I can teach you to make a gazillion bucks easy...." and the like probably aren't very credible. The ones that are genuine will offer real, substantive advice/help are worth a second look.

For those who want to make a (non)issue about BusinessCoach's post and the fact that he happens to be a business coach/mentor, all I can say is I guess they'd prefer you were a beekeeper that happened to have some "good ideas" that you got from a book ... :D

Thanks for two great posts on the DP forum. I look forward to reading more...

I loved your advice I know that I have not done at least 2 of the steps mentioned and have probably cost myself at least $100,000.00. Thank you, thank you, thank you for telling me what I needed to hear.

Realest thing ever written, even tho i knew this already, it is good to see it composed in such a magnificent way!
Great work my friend, great work indeed! I find it so true in regard to the mentor aspect of things, because a lot of people feel that they can do it themselves, but they just get misinformed and miss success!

    thanks for the compliment

and man, you said a mouth full about being stretched beyond comfort zones and setting a high standard.

If standards were set higher by individuals in their OWN lives, they wouldn't have to worry about getting "scammed" by all the beekeepers "selling shovels"

Wow! This is one of the best threads I have ever read on DP or any other IM forum for that matter. :)

Number 2 I practice religiously! Even If I don't think I will pursue a market or a particular business endeavor, I will still thoroughly write out a business plan. This helps to collect thoughts and efficiently judge is this a viable market/endeavor to pursue?

Coach/ Mentor is a GREAT ONE! I have been try to network more with like minded people...

re: #2 -- definitely a difference between a good idea and a FEASIBLE ONE -the feasibility study takes time (and sometimes expense) but is always worth it in the end...even if that means scrapping or putting an idea on the back burner.

Good post. Thank you for that. It was really interesting learning about the business coaches by you. A business coach can use their expertise to help you identify a realistic plan to achieving company success and establishing a time line of company advancement. Knowing your limitations are very important so that you company does not fall into a false sense of security when the limitation zone is reached.

The only thing that costs anything in the article is a mentor/coach. And suprise suprise.....

The auther is a "eBusiness Coach".

Youi do not need a coach. You do not need a mentor. You need belief in yourself and your product and the determination to succeed. You don't even need a "good education". I quit school after I was 16 and now run a successful online business that I knew nothing about when I started it. Self-belief....determination. End thread.

You sir are in the minority.

Name a top professional that does not have a business coach. I dont mean someone making a couple 100 thousand. I am talking multi millionaires

bill gates, oprah, donald trump ALL HAVE COACHES today, and all recommend coaches.

So who should we believe...you? or the people who live it?

And I don't apologize for my profession. Notice how many people found the article helpful? I wrote this in 2007, i have had hundreds of people thank me for it, and have made quite a few friends as a result of it.

None of them seemed to care what I do for a living...I guess that means you are just jealous you are not qualified to be a coach, so you scoff.

Attitude determines altitude friend...and well...good luck with yours cuz its pretty crappy.

    In the article I said:

hehe - you proved my point...congratulations on being the bottom 90
