"Why must life be so hard?" - Homer Okay, I own a gadget blog, blah blah blah and since it's gonna take a while (a long while) to get on the top ten pages in Google and Msn for the term gadgets, it's kinda hard getting a lot of visitors. The only spike of visitors I get is using Shoutwire. When I get shouted then BAM I get a lovely amount of visitors. But after a shout, everything dwindles down to pathetically less 90-150 per day. Those are from SEs mostly and refering links or old Shoutwire stories. So, Can anyone give me any advice on how to get people to come to my site. Man this sounds like a completely newbie question doesn't it? Skinny
digg.com can be another option you may look at alongwith a PR release to 1)www.prweb.com 2)www.free-press-release.com 3)www.e-xl.com 4)www.inthepress.ru 5)www.pressbox.co.uk 6)www.press-world.com/add 7)www.prleap.com 8)24-7PressRelease.com 9)www.PRWEBDIRECT.com
Google Adwords - is the solution for you. But, you have to pay the price to bring visitors. Also follow the suggestion by "max pain".
Yep if you are ready to spend then google adwords as maldives said as well as adbrite, overtures a lot many avenues to explore
Skinny, do you have any travel gadgets on your site? I run TravelRants.com and I'm thinking about adding a travel gadgets section to the site. Maldives, do you have any travel related articles? Darren
Skinny when you find the answer be sure to let me know also. I have set up a blog (1 month ago) which google loves and sends traffic to my main site, worth a thought for you
You are likely to get decent ranking just few weeks but, google will eventually drop you from the SERPs. It happens to most of the new sites. Google will test the credibilty of your website by throwing it into the hell (Sandbox). Getting good ranking in Google SERPs is not an easy task.
Shoutwire, DIGG, cools sites, etc... all very nice for that traffic BURST but like you already said, not long term, steady traffic. Aside from SE traffic you have few choices. Links from websites that will send you traffic, like other gadget and electronic sites, college crowd, review sites, etc. Repeat visits, this is not easy but it is one way to keep your site busy. Ads. You can buy traffic but this sucks since it can get expensive and unless you have a way of profiting from each visitor it's a waste. On a side note, advertising can be ok even if you have a SMALL loss as long as a certain percentage of those visitors come back... this way you'll EVENTUALLY have a lot of return traffic and won't have to advertise anymore. best of luck... I can't help you with your FIRST question though.
It's easier to get traffic when you go into a less competitive field. I think with your topic you're competing with about 4,000,000 others just like it. You not only have to be better than the competition, but because you're new, you have to be waaaay better.
Thanks to all for responding. Most of the points brought up are exactly what I've been thinking. As for adwords I don't have that kind of money right now. PeterT the whole idea in being different is what I'm trying to capatilize on. I've got something coming up behind the works. Yes, as it stands now a simple gadget blog doesn't cut it. If you have any more suggestions please throw them in the mix. Skinny
Have you considered some link-baiting on your blog. Write something controversial, get it out there (digg, adwords, whatever) and wait for controversy.
Hmm . .. I never considered that. Neat idea. I guess you have to watch not to go over the line. Skinny
Works like wonder. I started the firefox on psp fake following a guy who posted itune on psp, just for the sake of showing it was fake, but it turned out people would come to see it, and that's when I got one good amount of visitor and yet to this day, I'm still receiving visitors for this story.
Publishing a newsletter really helps my site get traffic...but then again, you'd have to work on getting subscribers. I don't remember how I got XXXX subscribers exactly, I know it took a lot of work both promoting the newsletter and writing it. And 2 years later everytime I publish a newsletter- I get traffic because the newsletter directs them to the site...and then they pass it on, forward it, etc. BUT this may not work for all industries.
"OH you Liar!" *Frankie Howerd voice* No, seriously well done, nice images. People actually want to believe in these things, so in that light are we actually just giving them what they want/fuelling their fantasy? Firefox on the PSP, get real, about as likely as Windows on the mac....
Skinny, Have you tried writing articles about gadgets and submitting them to article directories? You could write reviews, comparisons between similar gadgets, explanations of how various gadgets work, etc. Write 400-700 words of really interesting information about gadgets and then submit to popular article directories. You'll get lots of free and steady traffic doing this. Good luck! Bonnie
You know what, I think that needs to be my next plan of attack. It would help me to be a little more reputable and I have a chance to get some traffic. Alright article writing here I come. Continue with the suggestions. Skinny
