Are you using multiple ads in an ad group?

I only recently started using multiple ads in an ad group. Google serves up whatever number of ads I have in the group and adjusts how often each ad is served based on perfomance. In concept it's great but I can't quite measure the effectiveness yet but trust that Google can.

If you are using multiple ads, what's your experience? Are there any negatives to multiple ads in a group?

I'm not doing it any more, but I did it initially to find the best performing ad text. Since there was one clear winner I've stuck with that.

I thinkyou need at least 100 clicks over a few days before you can really tell which ad converts best.
Googles way of doing it based on performance doesn't really cut it, a poor ad can get a couple of clicks early on then Google run it for 60/70% of the time making it hard for the other ad to catch up.

There is an overide feature that you can set so that each ad in your group gets even time regardless of the number of clicks received.

I can't find that feature any more......can someone let me know where it is please ?.

There are several mechanism in AdWords that you can get advantages when you use several Ads in one Ad Group.

The Main Point is that AdWords you never know wich of your ads will be more CTR% effective but if you check the AdServing Option Google will do the job for you: he will better serve the better CTR% Ad.

This also happens at Keyword Level! - if you have a group of keywords in a same adgroup that has better performance with a ad, these keywords will be automatically be served for that specific ad - this increase your quality score and prevent the keywords from being disactivated.

Also always using several Ads you imporve quality - you can run reports weekly, delete bad ads and create new ones based on the better ones.

When you writ ads, write two of them. Google will automatically run both and show you which one performs better. It is called "split testing". After a period of time, see which ad was worked better. Keep that ad and write one to replace the one that did n't perform as well.

    Thanks,
    Samroy!!:)

I usually start with 5 ads per ad group. Build on what works, kill off what doesn't.

I do my add groups based on conversion and topic.

So if I get some really high CTR's on certain keywords within a topic then I will put them into their own group. To raise the ctr even more.

Good advice Brad, I do that as well.
I also split the groups up according to price per click, keeping the smaller priced ones in a group together. It just keeps it neater.
I also give each term it's own price individually and when I am really keen, or bored, lol, tweak each one trying to keep it around 3rd to 6th position on the first page.

Why would you group high CTR's together? I believe CTR plays in to Quality Score but only per keyword not per group. Is it some other reason or is just a preference on your part? Thanks.

You are correct. The quality score is assigned at the keyword level, not the campaign or ad group level.

I think what Brad is saying is that if he has 5 keywords in an ad group and notices one or two that are performing very well he creates a new ad group specifically for those keywords in order to create more targeted ads.

In certain circumstances I start ad groups with multiple keywords and do the same. It's kind of a screening process to determine where the action's at.
