I don't think it is. In my opinion Alexa is almost meaningless, others may have a different opinion.

As far as I know Alexa determines its figures by what sites people who have the tool bar installed visit.

Do you use their toolbar? Know anyone who does?

i think it is of importance, your site/blog's credibility is almost based on that. many advertisers want some alexa rank. it is a good source for examining the traffic and your site usage.

    Alexa = inaccurate data...

But as mentioned above - a lot of people still lookup your Alexa ranking to see where your site ranks.

Might as well offer Compete data too: hxxp://siteanalytics.compete.com/

It has some become a parameter for some of the webmasters and that is what makes it popular among the other web users. If the populatrity goes down so does the alexa ranking. Its kinda hype that surrounds it that has make alexa popular.

Alexa is close to useless for serious analysis or decision-making. Proof? You can easily spike your numbers by getting a few friends to download the toolbar and make a few visits to your site each day. Even if you wouldn't bother doing this, you have to assume that less scrupulous webmasters can and do "cheat" by doing this.

If you really need competitive traffic data, check our Compete (www.compete.com) and Quantcast (www.quantcast.com). They use aggregated data from ISP's so it's a larger sample group, designed to be representative of the population, and resistant to tampering by individuals.

    ;)

I think alexa data is useless for small website. It will be meaningful when ranking is better than 10000

Alexa is utterly useless, unless you plan to sell your site at one time.
Other then that, you shouldn't really use it. Like adverlicious, you can increase your rank by simply getting friends to download the toolbar and go to your site.

Personally I like Alexa... Actually according to me we can trust alexa more than PageRank.. but thats not applicable for ur site or my site.... but its applicable for those sites which are genuine and who dont inflate their rankings... we can knw that when we visit the site......

A good example is in Google you may find a dump website on top on the result... only because they did SEO... but on alexa its difficult to maintain a ranking...... we can trust atleast the first 1000 Ranks.....

    its my personal view......

Just like someone said before, alexa matters when your site is quite popular, like alexa rank 50 000 or less.
Remember, alexa takes time to update, so it can be late for like one-two days in analyzing traffic.
And if you have more traffic than someone else's site, but your rank worse, this means he has more pageviews per visitor. Look, youtube is on 3rd place now having less traffic than msn.com, which is on 4th.
I guess it also matters what country are your visitors from.

And again, alexa is a tool, to see the popularity of a website.
If one site has better rank on alexa, it's absolutely doesn't mean it earns more.
