The point is whether your visitors would like to click the image ads or not?

Of course. You'll get more clicks, each with lower CPC. In some cases your total revenue might still go up, but there's no guarantee.

It makes sense from the advertiser's standpoint: why pay more for RAWs, when Unique visitors make the difference?

Am I the only person in the world who always thought that putting images next to ads was a borderline TOS violation to begin with? I don't see how it can be construed as anything BUT drawing undue attention.

If google see the images next to your links will they ban you straight away or give you a warning first?

The below quote sums it up. Check out Joel Comm's site, he has the images too.

If they hate you they ban you, if they sorta hate you they "stupid price" you, if they like you you rake in the dough. By "they" I mean their reporting algorithms, and ultimately whichever representative actual reviews your site if it comes to that (and perhaps his kid, or wife, or dog, or whoever he has a beef with that day).

They don't really care what their TOS says, it's a guideline. Once you've run several accounts and seen one prosper and the other flop or get banned you'll realize it's a game of dodging whatever eggs their latest algorithms are throwing at you. I've pointed this out before, their brilliant programming thinks my computer is in Moldova. If you're making peanuts then you'll make less peanuts by removing the images. I say have some guts. Every time they knock me on my butt it pushes me to diversify even further.

I now am earning the majority of my income through other arrangements. So it's easy for me to thumb my nose at them. :)

I have a conspiracy theory. Micro$oft is watching this fiasco carefully. When the time is right they are going to swoop in with a knock off of adsense minus the headaches of it. It's their SOP. When that happens Google's monopoly will crumble and they'll file futile lawsuits and... Well, it's just a conspiracy theory.

In Case anyone is still reading ...

Google is actually very bad at what they do. They hit one important niche upfront. They created a super simple, super fast, search engine while all of their competitors were covering their pages with garbage. So we patronized them to this point. They actually do complex things very poorly. Anyone who uses AdWords knows how convoluted it is. Yahoo, well they haven't changed YPN in a year and it lacks WAY too many things. Micro$oft has cornered the market on accomplishing complex tasks. Watch! When their tool hits the market it will do back flips. It may even be a full blown client side application bundled with Office 2008.5 ... when that happens we will exit the dark ages.

So you Micro$oft spies out there... PM me cause I need a favor.

--- Anybody actually read this far? ... Didn't think so. LOL!

I tried it and removed it. While it did boost clicks I'm concerned about the overall short term benefit vs. the risk of getting banned. Figured it wasn't worth it.

I'm not associated with Google in any way, but for me, long approval times for a certain thing (since image ads are approved by humans, not by text parsers) can also mean high competition, hot opportunities, and a place where you also want to be seen.

Well, I removed the line from the image, and actually have a line separating the image and the ad. But I don't know whether this is still "legal"
