Hello, Just curious... are you (Digital Point Forums) going to upgrade to vBulletin 4 (Gold version to be released before 2010) in the next months? Thank you, Jonathan
My forum is running on vBulletin 3.8.4 and I'm waiting for vBulletin 4 to become stable enough and it has the mods I need and then, I'll upgrade. But, for now it's not worth it.
I'll disappear from vb.com when vB4 is stable. I'm just there because I'm trying to help push it to a stable product... I certainly have other things I'd rather be doing than tracking down (and fixing in most cases) their bugs.
So, we won't be on it any time soon Is vb4 a complete rewrite, or are they sill using the old vB3 coding? It's in need of a complete rewrite.
Might be sooner than you would think. I've already rewritten all of the 250 or so custom plug-ins I wrote for 3.8.x that I use, so it's ready to go from that standpoint. All of the remaining issues with it I can fix myself by editing the PHP files if I have to (if the fixes don't make it into the source soon). It's a rewrite, but they are obviously reusing some code when they can/should.
You my friend, are a GENIUS! 250+ custom plugins? That's like Wow! I have 17 custom ones on a forum of mine and I find them really tiring Rewriting them to work with VB4 is gonne be one hell of a daunting task. I'll, most probably, outsource it... Have no idea, how you can work with 250+ plugins :|
He already said that "I've already rewritten all of the 250 or so custom plug-ins I wrote for 3.8.x that I use". DON.
I was reading on the vbulletin forum that they are aiming at a Vbulletin 5.0 within 18 months of Vbulletin 4.0's release. Is this true? I can't find the thread I was reading, and I was wondering if other people read/heard the same thing. If so, isn't that becoming a bit.. much? Especially if 5.0 is re-written with a new core? I'm not sure if I'll be upgrading, I currently have 3 heavily modded vbulletin forums, and I'm just not sure if it's worth it anymore to upgrade. Especially since you need to "re-buy" a owned license for 4.0, but I believe if you currently have a 3.0 owned license you'll be grandfathered in to 4.0 until your year expires (updates) and if you want to update further (4.1, 4.2, etc) you must re-buy the owned license for whatever the new price is. It really sounds like Vbulletin is trying to scrape as much as they can out of people now. Maybe I'm just a bit bitter because I thought the "Owned License" meant I only have to pay for annual updates, and not officially have to re-buy another owned license for each major upgrade.
After Jelsoft/vB was bought by IB ( Internet Brands), I decided not to upgrade. I still feel like I made a good decision. vB4 is basically vB 3.9, only they want you to pay $200-300 extra to use it. All the features they added are already available on vBorg or can easily be added. There is nothing special about vB4 that stands out. In fact the color scheme/new skin is terrible. If I upgrade, it won't be till vB5 and that is if its totally different. I also have lots of mods on my vB boards and it doesn't make sense to move to vB4. It will cost me way to much and become a hassle to transfer/upgrade all the mods/skins etc.. vB 3.8 is great and I'm happy with it. I bet anyone, most people will not be moving to vB4 right away. It will take a few months before anyone really moves on. It is worth it for brand new boards, but for already established boards it's a total waste. IB is there to take money from us... they BOUGHT vB because they knew there is a high demand for it... so why not buy them and make fast easy money!
It would be nice to see another forum software in the webmaster market. I have seen IPB and vBulletin. Why can't there be other paid software? They control the market.. So they can release "bogus" releases of there product as you just said.
