If it were really agreed, how come there are so many reciprocal directories out there?

The price of running a reciprocal dir is eternal vigilance. Or, a really good spider that can check all of the variables automatically: robots.txt, de-indexing, nofollows, orphan pages, cloaking, removed links, and any other nonsense webmasters think up to get one over on you.

Directories are all about getting 1 way links.
Just forget about reciprocal, if you really want it, require that the page is cached.

    Great Point!

I will be checking all reciprocal links and deleting sites that don’t link back.

I like the idea of setting a limit of a minimum link PR reciprocal exchange.

I think it’s always an idea to offer reciprocal links on a new directory as it helps for content.

    Thanks Brian

It might be a good idea to set the minimum close to to what you offer in return. Setting the minimum reciprocated link at say PR3 when you're offering a listing in a PR0 category is a definite turn off.

You know Creed thats an excellent idea...

So what your saying is if my directory catagories offer the submitter PR3-PR4
I ask for the same in return and charge like half off correct?

Im all for that if the submitter would go for that...

    thx

I mentioned it primarily because I see new directories with little to no promotion establishing a minimum PageRank for the reciprocated link to be included in their directory. I have to wonder if I'm likely to see much in return as far as traffic or a valued link.

It would be more attractive if new directories accepted a reciprocated link on an indexed page and maybe upped the requirements a bit as they grow. And we all know this doesn't apply to everyone.

Mutually beneficial arrangements have the best chance of success. ;)

Still comes down to needing to check each link either manually or writting code to do it.

Just stating the requirements doesn't do much, not many people read the requirement list when they submit a directory.:(

No not really.... you could spend a few bucks and invest in your link transactions like the rest of us do... http://www.mystikmedia.com/link-checkup.asp

    Hope this helps out ...

My (limited) experience is that the only people who use the recip. option dump you on a crap page. So I've removed recip. option from my directories.
