Personally I go to the gym, but only because its convenient. I recently tried Yoga in a health resort near me, and was absolutely amazed at how effective it is. Anyone who thinks Yoga is just for old people or girls doesnt have a clue what they are missing and needs to try it. If anyone does martial arts then try Yoga as well! It will help your balance and flexability and lots more.

I'm 50 and rock hard with low body fat ratio. You can see the development of a six pack on me now, and the reason I decided to do it was not to extend my life, as I don't believe that happens normally, but to help me with self confidence.

I am an executive of a corporation now (through a merger), and I believe that leaders need to inspire their compatriots. Plus, I feel more confident and more energetic.

How I got it started was mountain biking. I fell in love! I used to run, but no longer can take the pounding and jarring, as my family has a history of arthritis. I just joined a gym, and I bike to the gym, workout, then I ride another 5-10 miles after the fact. That is my routine.

For older people, I highly endorse bicycles as a starting point. I don't eat special diets, but I am conscious of what I eat and it seems natural, but the exercise trumps diet 99% of the time in initial fat loss. I don't use supplements, although I am not against nutritional enhancement. If you want to take the risk of possibly destroying your body chemistry, then I have no issue with steroids, but would not use them myself. If I were under pressure to be supremely buff, as in being a pro bodybuilder, I know the temptation would be there to shortcut. I am not, so no problem.

When I was a young Marine I used to eat like a horse and was still in great shape, but I was a Marine, so that had an effect. ;) Moderation is key with food intake. Eat to live, not live to eat. It is an addiction to some for emotional reasons and there is Overeaters Anonymous that will help, others may require other medical/psychiatric help. I don't go to Overeaters Anonymous, but I am in AA and have been sober for 14 years now. It worked for me!

Some people are genetically capable of making really fast results happen with minimal effort. Some people are not. Fast results can sometimes make you quit earlier, because you got there so fast you believe you can do it anytime, and hard gainers will sometimes quit because they try to get fast results and cannot. My thought is let your body do what it wants to do and then do one more rep, go one more block, or go 3 more steps and keep moving as often as you can. Your body loves you and knows how to operate if you work with it and create just a little more pressure each time. Especially if you are older or haven't been active for awhile, give your body time to adjust and ALWAYS have a rest period, a day of no activity other than normal stuff. We humans can get obsessive about almost anything we like, so be moderate and avoid compulsion if possible. Moderation will increase the chances that you will continue your workout. The average is thirty days to six months of consistency and you will most likely have a habit. Everyone is different.

Thanks, great thread! Oh sorry... The gym is my answer. Never have experienced yoga. (I talk too much, I know. Forums love it though, creates content count)

Given a chance to choose something to keep me fit, I would choose yoga over gym. But otherwise, both are good.

Yoga is amazing! It is the best exercise you can do. It works out your entire body. It gives you a cardio workout, a muscle workout and increases your flexibility. It also improves your brain function and will keep your body from getting old (meaning arthritis, flexibility, muscle and bone deterioration). If you do yoga all your life, your mind and body will stay young and healthy. While you may see the effects of aging, you will not feel it :). Again, I say YOGA is AMAZING!

Add one to the gym column for me. Although as of late I've found that i need to stretch and walk just as much to keep from feeling too "out of shape". Its funny to say out of shape as i try to go to the gym 3-4 times a week. I'd rather keep flexible than tear or stretch a muscle.

    Yoga doesn't work for me.

I have low blood pressure, so I nearly pass out everytime I do yoga because it calms me too much!

"Roll up like a ragdoll" Only if I can pass out like one too!

yoga is a decent tool but its not the bee all and end all of exercise and nor is it rounded.

you couldnt say to a boxer or athlete sit and do yoga 7 times a week and you'll be ready to fight etc. But none the less its a good tool and destresser.

I've tried yoga, but I much prefer a traditional gym workout. I'm in the gym 4-5 times per week, at least an hour a day. Some of my workouts run over 2 hours.

I'm not putting down yoga, but if you're looking to build muscle yoga isn't going to cut it.

I prefer Yoga seriously. It's great to combine the power of myself and nature to gain healthier life. I really enjoy Yoga. It's absolutely relaxing and other hand, it empowers me. :D
