I'm not a new editor, but, asking a new editor how they got accepted won't help you. :) It often takes several tries to become an editor because it's a process, not just an application.

You'll normally get a list of possible reasons why your application was rejected. Your job is to do a little self examination, figure out which of those might apply to you, correct what needs to be corrected or satisfied, and reapply.

It's a test of your ability to do what editors actually do, so don't get discouraged, just be totally honest and try to fulfill the requirements. :)

    http://www.dmoz.org/about.html

How do I add a site to the ODP?
    http://www.dmoz.org/help/submit.html

Does the ODP have an express submit service that will get my site listed quicker?

Offering to pay an editor to list your site is bribery, and you will be banned from the Directory altogether, so, I hope that's not what you meant in your PM. If you don't understand that one basic thing, I can understand why you might not be accepted as an editor. I'm considering that English might not be your first language and giving you the benefit of doubt. :)

But, the fact that you asked me in a PM, is a little concerning.

DMOZ doesn't have a paid submission but DMOZ editors have. You can go to scriptlance and buy a listing in DMOZ for less than $100. You can check my old thread DMOZ pricelist in this forum for more information. :)

Many have found out there's a severe penality for believing that, but hey, it's your site at risk, I don't own any sites, :D.

I applied to become an editor a couple of weeks ago after constant nagging of how terribly my local areas categories were maintained, with approx only 30% of links actually still active, and only a couple of those actually representing (in the description) of the sites content. Nonetheless, I got rejected, with a 'sorry we just gave that category to someone else, but we'd like to take you on board, please apply for another category'. In those 2 weeks (or so) since I applied, this 'new editor' hasn't done jack shit.

Ah well, that's what happens when you try to help others' out for free. I'll reapply sometime in the future, but only if I think there's reasonable chance of being approved!

Edit: I must also state that the only 'regional' sites I actually run are both already listed in the directory, so I was not applying for the sole reason to benefit myself. I know plently local businesses and personnel with personal sites which, in my opinion, based on strict ODP guidelines, do deserve to be listed, but aren't. On the other hand, there's far too many sites in this region that are listed that are just...awful. I found a site in my town category, yet the site is about another town?! Further to that, the only content was approx 30 words, with ads around it. Great.

Sounds unusual, because more than one editor can be named for any category, so it was just bad timing. Two new editors arriving in the same category, at the same time, while both are trying to learn the ropes could be difficult.
You could apply for a nearby town, do a good job there, then request editing permissions in your home town. It can have more than one named editor.

In the mean time, you could add sites you think need to be listed to your home town, into your Bookmarks category, edit them there, and send them to your home town category. You would get the editing credit for finding and editing them, but the resident editor, or any higher editor would have to actually add them.

Editors try to work together. What you're describing is a frustrating situation, but you can eventually edit there, and in any of the surrounding towns/cities also. You just need to apply for them one at a time. We strongly encourage you to do just that, take on more and more areas, :).

I got the job after two tries. After I got rejected the first time I changed a few things and reapplied. Four days later I was an editor.

Advice duly noted - I resubmitted an application for a more knocked-down localised category. Here's hoping;)

What ever you do, when you re-apply do not defer at all. Keep it basically the same. It is a whole process and they will go back and look to see if you applied before. If you BS or stray too far from the last applications, you will be rejected permanently. I know. It happened to me. One way to tell if they are looking into your application seriously is that you get no response back with 48 hours. If you do not get a response, then cross your fingers. You made it past stage 1.
