So I've been reading about SEO/directories, marketing, and other related material lately, and since I don't have much experience with listing in directories I obviously haven't seen any benefits. Here are a few things I've learned from reading, are they true? -In order for a directory to be worth listing in, it must have a high PR rating. -The main focus of getting listed in a directory with high PR is to get your sites PR higher resulting in better search engine results? -Directories do not give you much traffic, but the higher PR you get from being listed in good ones get you traffic from your, yet again, search engine results?
I don't think a high PR rating is that important. Personally I am more concerned with the overall quality of the directory and whether it will be around 6 months from now. If I buy a yearly or permanent listing I want to get the longest term for my money and some PR will usually come eventually if the directory is good.
I have to agree with jg123: I wouldn't rely on directories for PR too much as there's many better ways to achieve this.
Well, I mean, are directories even worth the money? Lets say I sign up for 10 paid directories that are good quality like Alive, Aviva, Yahoo, etc... this could run me $1000-$2000 (and many might be recurring). Is investing that kind of money in directories worth it?
It really depends on how much you value your own site. And what you are tring to do. If you plan on staying online for awhile and want to maintain your rankings then you are going to need links. Directories are a good place to start as most will provide good quality links, provided that you submit to the right categories and write good descriptions. If you have the money to make your site better then do it, why cheat your business?
Simply ask yourself: Would I like to have hundreds of backlinks in directories or not? I think there is only one answer to this question. Will anybody disagree?
