Basically I heard from this guy that his website used to be on page 4 of google results, but after getting a couple of .edu and .gov backlinks, he jumped to the first page of google in 1 day!

What are your experiences on this?

.Edu's and .gov's by themselves are not great, just as all .info's are not bad.

Since most .edu's and .gov's happen to be well maintained, respectable sites, they carry quite a bit of weight.

If I were to simply pick up an .edu or a .gov today, and link to you, it would obviously be a worthless link.

gr8liverpoolfan said it better than anyone could :)

thats exactly true, those kind of sites with .edu and .gov carry more weight and are authoritative sites, generally speaking.

Get Bl from .edu, .gov is not the reason, may be the site having high PR. Getting BL from any non spam and high PR site is good and this will help to get good PR to your site and thes leads u to a #1 position

It's not necessary that if something worked for someone then it will work for everyone.

The consensus is that edu and gov links give more weight than say .com links.

However you still need to take into account PR and anchor text.

Remember google uses many factor to rank a page, and in uncompetive listings yes 1 link could make the difference.

I guess you could get your links on .gov sites by commenting on blogs?

    Dohh

Gov and edu links carry more weight since when ?

How many google searches do you do and notice there is a edu link or a goverment link first on the search engines ?

Ill bet its not that many, if they carried more weight then the top 10 for most searchs would be littered with these kind of sites, this clearly never happens !

I agree..if all things were equal, all sites would carry the same weight. Obviously, the power of backlinks from a site depend on a lot of different factors...

For instance, I have noticed a PR0 site that was in the same niche carries just about the same weight as a PR4-5 site that was in an unrelated niche.

The real secret sauce is to get a backlink with the appropriate anchored keyword on a site that is related (or somewhat related) to the niche your site is in.

There's no easy way. I have about 12,000 backlinks to my site. Only 3 are .edu links.

Good quality content will get you natual links from these sites which are deemed trusted TLD. Many people will also actively seek these types of links through on topic blog commenting and forum participation on domains hosted on .gov or .edu domains.

If you can acquire a .gov or .edu take it but don't worry about looking for that magic pill because these domains don't have it. Build links normally and if you come across one of these links , good luck !

I asked some people they said that the PR of these sites is also important, but they generally hold more weight than .com anyway.

Yes, .edu and .gov are better than .com. But i think your friend must have linked some thematically relevant site that is why he could jump to page 1 of Google.
