if you create a directory for a underserved marketspaces you can be fairly successful. Money wise wellllll it all depends on your marketspace, how well you market your directory, what kind of value adds you are prepared to provide, and whether or not your members are getting any measurable value from your directory.

I see this question alot in the forum; How much money made from a web directory?

A web directory is just like any other (commercial) website, and yes you can make money with a web directory as long as you market your product well. Think before you act! Write a business plan, investigate your competitors, set your budget and create your web (directory) site. Invest time and money to let your web (directory) site grow, add fresh content and keep an eye on the submissions. I see alot of people starting a paid web directory just for the money, they will lose interest in maintaining the directory and it's off to a slow dead.

If you're planning on starting a web directory, just go ahead an do it. But remember to stay focused on your targets (as set in your business plan).

    Good luck.

imho there is demand but you can meet this demand only if you work with some exception.Exception may be aggressive marketing.

aggressive marketing may be good money wise, but how about the demand? directories who market aggressively may not be the one who are sought after.

The directories everyone sees here on the forum are usually of the "general" varietly, but there are twice as many being put on sites for cataloging links for a niche or link exchange, etc.

my advice is this: don't expect to get rich after making a directory. It will require a lot of hard work and dedication from your part to make it really work, and even then you won't get rich :)

hahaha firestorm I was going to say "maybe not yours" ... ;) ... but you are correct in that statement. Directories by themselves, especially all the scripts out there, are nothing more than just link farms. Now throw a directory into a vertical portal and add some nice services around the directory and the portal, and you easily make some nice coin with "business" directories!! :)

I think that niche directories can work. There are millions of general directories.

However, rule #1 is to build something that is able to provide information and a good experience to your visitor. It shouldn't be about money (in an ideal world).

So, yes they probably are still in demand. However, now its about being different and unique instead of installing a script.

In a sense there is money to be made from a directory but it comes down to how much is your time worth. If you choose to target a particular niche then you have to spend the majority of your time designing, enhancing, and marketin the directory. I have had my niche directory online for almost two months now and although there has not been a substantial traffic flow into the directoy yet I have managed to make almost 60 bucks from the directory. Granted I then reinvested that 60 dollars into purchasing sponsored and paid links into pr5+ directories but its a long term investment. I do think one can become successful with general directories if you spend the time developing the website instead of just publishing another directory. I have only spent my money on listings into directories that have achieved a solid page rank and have taken the time to offer a "service" to listers rather then just a "portal" of listings or link farms as others call it. I am still a noob to the whole directory thing but I have learned a lot since I did my first listing into one back in January :)

I did the directory thing before the "dot bomb" period... and due to the rise of services like AdSense, I'm back at it.

My latest attempt is something targeted to bloggers, and I do realize there is competition out there, but it just seems that if there are ways to provide value to the people in your directory you should be able to build it over time with effort and marketing.

    Heh, I hope I'm right!

    I love running a directory...
I think they still have their place in the web world... just make sure you add a little something special to yours.
ALso DO NOT keep the default template (sorry david, but i can't stand seeing another phpld default template ;) )

    Hi,

Well many people have different view about weather a directory is any good as the market is saturated now with directories. I think if you can make you directory niche and put some money behind it you could do well.

    Thanks

Links from HIGH rated sites and high PR will allways be in demand still for some time, but you must answer couple of questions like:

    - how my directory is better than others
    - do my directory serves extra values to visitor
    - etc similar questions

    the thing is, search engines droping these out quite easily so you better think of some extra angle or value to that;
