Just came across this promotion on Google 1st which promises 1st page ranking on Google for your pages.

Cost is about $290 for normal version and $399 for Gold version.

My question is are there really 'secrets' to SEO that some people know that we don't?

These types of claims are rarely legit. They might tell you some things that worked for them, but it does not mean that those strategies will necessarily work as well for you. For most seo's these kits would be a waste of money. I guess for some beginners it might be valuable. I wouldn't trust this particular company though. The way they use google in their domain name looks like they are trying to trick people into thinking they are buying this kit through google.

Seriously - everyone is looking for the magic bullet of getting to the first page. It's called hard work and patience. Nothing else but that.

If you want to have fun with them ask them to put you on Google Page 1 for "sex toys". Your site would then sell for $1,000,000 in New York today.

And the secret to SEO is

    success = SEO + Traffic + Links

The question is how you do this...

I've spent about $15 in hosting and about two hours everyday on posting and SEO for a couple of months and my site is already on page two on one of my keywords so there is no secret, and I'm still learning so it is all about consistent work and when you least expect it things will happen.

There are tons of secrets but many of them are scams, most guaranteed SEO services either get you there with paid sponsorship or they rank you on page one for very non-competitive terms. Check out the SEO scams category on my blog for more details of how this works.

One of the biggest secrets of SEO is to be able to sift through the millions of posts of myths and misinformation that exist on these and other webmaster forums.

    good luck.

Nope, there aren't. I think the previous posters have pretty much covered it but the "secret" to getting onto page 1 of Google in a hurry (and to staying there) is to pick keywords with little competition. However, little competition normally means little traffic equals little dollars, so why bother?

If you go after high traffic terms, you unfortunately have probably picked keywords with entrenched competition (i.e. 'sex toys"), good luck getting there any time soon using white hat techniques. There is only so much that on page optimization and internal link sculpting can do for rankings. For high competition terms, it's grinding out the links consistently, over a long enough period of time to catch up to the incumbents. Optimizing for long tail related terms first is the proper approach and ensuring your content is "link worthy" will also help by generating "natural" links over time.

Fortunately I've found there is a middle ground in optimizing for businesses in local niches, where there is some competition but most of it is clueless as to what works from an SEO perspective. These sites can normally be moved up onto page one within 2 to 6 months.

Moral of the story, help your clients choose their money keywords carefully.

    cheers,

    Jim

For the past 30 days I've been constantly working on this one niche which has about 3K-5K searcher per month (using google keyword tool) With hard work, my site now ranks number 1 and 2 (indented listing) on 1 page of google.co.uk. My site use to sit on 2nd page, and then 9th spot on first page, then 7th and now 1st and 2nd. It has been ranking Number 1 since yesterday so the sales should be coming very soon.

In my experience, ranking number 1 is hard if the keyword is competitive, like "make money online". The first page competition have links in their thousands. Ranking number 1 for keywords with competition that has little or no backlinks is easier but you still have to work for that number 1 position.

Heres my tip. Get firefox and SEO quake to see what you're up against then decide.

Yes, it all depends on how competetive your keywords are. If you are in a very competetive niche, looking at long tail keywords is a good idea to get started, but also trying to get creative will help. Use the adwords keyword tool and spend an hour typing in as many variations as you can come up with for your keyword. Make sure you set the phrase match to "exact". Get creative.

Take notes on the terms that show high search volume, but low competition. Even in the highly competetive niches, there are smaller segments that will have good search volume with low enough competition that you can move up the rankings with some effort.

If you do this research before building your site, you can then build your site around these higher volume/lower competition keywords.

I'll pay anyone here $399 to get me listed #1 for video games.
Hell, I'll pay ten times that!

In all reality, if they could do this everyone would be #1.

I agree with the hard work and persistence at getting high ranks.

Secret is , and it ain't really a secret is high quality, highly relevant back links. I have recently taken one of my sites from the abyss to the front page of Google within 5 weeks, it takes a lot of work, persistence and in the end patience. Some of the keywords are $2-3 with Adwords, so top 10 in SERPs is saving me a lot of cash.

Hardwork and patience - unfortunately, not everyone has it. That's why many are either blackhatters in IM or they quit after not making money as soon as they expected.

PS: Backlinks...they matter more then your on-page optimization.

No and it is actually very easy to get to the first page of google and I mean very easy I could probably do it for you free, but don't expect any hits. I can get you to the first page of google as long as the search term has 0 searches a month and no one has optimized and built links for the keywords. That is what I am guessing these guys are offering to optimize your website for words that are rarley used so yes you will be on the first page of google, but you will not be recieving any traffic. Really if you want to get to the top of google for a certain set of keywords the best thing you can do is analyze your competitors on the first page see the amount of backlinks and check the keyword density they are using on there website for the keywords then attempt to copy by contacting all of the people they have links with and either submitting your link or contacting the site owner and asking for a link exchange.

When I first got into SEO, if there was one thing I learnt was that DO NOT BELIEF MAGIC PROMISES.

The company I worked for approached several SEO companies and only one actually said "We will try to get you onto the first page and you will pay us IF and WHEN we get to the first page."

Obviously we used them and they've done a great job so far :)

SEO is a lot of hard work, I would seriously doubt any company that worked that way because nobody can afford to work for free, so there is motivation to use blackhat or scam techniques to meet the payment criteria.

    Well this one did.

Considering they trained us up and did the work along side us, I can assure you there was no black hat shenanigans (maybe a little gray hat buts thats to be expected).

Their secret was this: By using WordTracker they identified the terms that were in less competitive areas and thus optimised those terms (we still got to choose the terms). This ensured that we did rank well for those terms and that we as a company made money and he was able to accomplish his pledge of his company not getting paid until that term got to the first page (not position) of Google. :)

    It worked VERY well.

Let me give you a example. This was in the chemical and oil storage industry. The term "fuel tank" is very competitive, but the term "bunded polyethylene fuel tank" isn't, but still brought in a huge amount of money. So we optimised for this term and made a lot of money.

I forget the name of the company at the moment, but will post it when I remember.
