I was just wondering if just anyone can get a .org extension. Even if enforcement is lax now, what about years from now. thanks for the help
If you want to gain any respect from your visitors, you will use the .org as it is intended for non-profit. Anyone can get one, there's no enforcement whatsoever.
if .org is not required, why are there other extensions, .biz, .ws , .cc , and so many all are there to symbolise some importance and effect on the user to decide to visit the website according to their intrests. .org is surely important for organisations. atleast a visitor would know that the website is of organisation.
In the past, extensions were supposed to mean something. That idea didn't really work out the way it's originators hoped. Now, more and more extensions are being used just to meet the volume of demand for domain names.
There are no requirements for .org, though most people only think of it as an organization domain. It is the same thing with all of the extentions that don't have specific requirements...A .info domain is "supposed" to be used with an information based site, but there are no rules against putting an online store on a .info domain. As Will mentioned, the extentions meanings didn't exactly go as ICANN wanted it to as they set it up... Tom
