Are there any seo tricks

    are there any SEO tricks to make a ref link rank better? i dont have access to the page to optimise it but i was just wondering if there was anything that could be done to make your sign up link beat those around you, All ref links are duplicate pages so can it be done.

    you often see a ref link as no1 on google, is that just down to backlinks and traffic?

    Yes, that is more to do with backlinks and traffic as these ref links are usually promoted in forums and blog comments. Google is trying to do away with these through by releasing the Panda and Penguin updates but it'll be quite some time before they accomplish that.

    Be ethical with Google, don't be an machine, be human ready to provide services or info that other's looking for!
    Try ethical seo technique, I.e: Great Content, Proper structure( site), Internal links & external links.

    It may be a bit hard because - as you said - it's duplicate content. If the domain has high authority you could try to spam it a bit with web 2.0/bookmarks/high pr comments etc and see how it works.
