Are there any search engines you need to submit new sites to?

    I know that major search engines like Google and Yahoo track down new sites via backlinks.

    Are there any other search engines - eg ASK or BING - that you need to actually submit a new site to?

    You should submit to Google and Y as well.
    With Google also submit a sitemal.xml and robots.txt

    Technically not a SE but DMOZ still does the trick. If you can get into Google , Bing then that covers 90% of the english speaking worlds searchs

    Try submitting to Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yandex, & Baidu...

    Most major engine's spiders will eventually crawl your website if properly optimized anyway, but these are a good starting point

    Yandex should defenitly not be overlooked they currently sen me more tarffic the yahoo and bing separately.

    I have put up brand new websites on new domains and had them indexed in Google in less than 24 hours without submitting them...

    You should submit to Google, Yahoo and Bing. These are the Search engines that really matter. Apart from these I wouldn't really lose some sleep.
