Are there any electrical or mechanical engineers in the house?

I need to calculate the size of an electric motor and proper gearing for a hobby project:

I need a quiet, slow electric motor to turn a 30" shaft of 1/8" steel rod which in turn transmissions to gear a metal plate which houses a 1.5 lb item under a minimum of torque.

Specifically, I need to know what size and type of electric motor would be sufficient and what size gears. Any guidance on transmission best practices would be appreciated too
