Are the indexed backlinks the only ones counted?

I have a PR3 site that shows 10 google backlinks but yahoo shows 223. The google results aren't even that interesting, they don't show a PR4 DMOZ link nor do they show a link on a PR3 page from wired.com.

Google obviously isn't showing all the backlinks it knows about, because I doubt I got a pr3 with just 10 backlinks. But why is there such a huge difference between google and yahoo on that? How do they choose which backlinks to show and is there any way to influence that?

Google isn't showing all the links because of saving servers resources. Matt Cutts mentioned it some time ago on his blog. Use yahoo to see backlinks

How would you do that? I just did a link:http://www.nerdcouncil.com and I got a result for every single thread on my forum. Somehow I doubt (though I wish) they all count as backlinks.

    From Matt Cutts blog:

"The link: command has always returned a small fraction of the backlinks that Google knows about, mainly for historical reasons (e.g. limited disk space on the machines that served up “link:” data)."

And it still remains the same now. You may see backlinks in the webmasters console
Backlink is a backlink. If it counts..that's another case

I doubt in that explaination. More I think this has to prevent spammers that would use that command to find where they can spam more and more, but there is no difference - the fact is they don't show everything with link: command.

What Google shows with the link command is totally worthless. So why do they even show anythng at all? All it does is confuse people like the OP on this thread.

NO, Google just delay showing the links in the link search but you can go with the webmaster tools or with yahoo search explorer to get the same info faster.

Yes, absolutely. Google does not show you all the links it indexes. However, Google take into consideration of all the links they indexed.

google webmasters is the best place to see the links they recognise for your site - although apparently even that doesn't include all the links they know about.

This includes links on pages from the supplemental index which I previously understood was not the case.

You can have a PR6 with one PR7 backlink, I fail to see how that has anything to do with it.

Google just takes longer on everything and is less trusting.
