I only use free directory inclusin services without reciprocals asked... I also use free directory submission softwares to save money but time-wise they will get 1 hour to submit your site to 150 directories, roughly...

It's better to submit your site manually instead of using automatic software submission.

I use them in start of every new website launch later on. I never turn back to them. Directories never rewarded me in terms of traffic. :(

i post my own site. i dont pay anyone. regardless of paying someone to promote your website, it is better that we promote our own site so that we have a control of where our site is being promoted..

If you can get into just a few (maybe 10 or so), bigg, high quality directories such as DMOZ, your search engine rankings will increase dramatically, as the good directories give very good authority backlinks.

Assuming that "submitting to directories" is one part of a larger slew of marketing and SEO strategies you plan to employ, then yes it can be extremely effective.

It definitively depends on quality of the links you get. Some backlinks will hurt your SERP, while others will help improve your PR. There are cases where a backlink produces a lot of irrelevant off-target traffic which is also bad. My opinion is not to submit your site to directories with low PR.

Directories submission is out of date nowadays. I have many websites and if you start promotion from directories submission as use to be you are in time trouble
Only articles marketing and web2.0 web submission work well
