before i shell out some cash to get some backlinks, i came accross that google tool where people can report on sites that sell links. now since google is all knowing, im sure they can see a surge of backlinks in a given 24hrs and know that those backlinks are unnaturally. if they do, will they cut your site from search engine results?

There is no way to control what links are comming to your site. You are responsible and will receive SERPs penalties for too many or irrelevant outbound links but knowing that you can't control who and for what reason links TO you there is no penalty, just for sure less value in PR juice.

Google won't ban your site from their search engine index, but your paid links will be worthless (meaning your organic backlinks, your page content and the keywords contained in that content will have to do all the work - as they should be doing in the first place). Google's far more interested in natural, organic links than artificial, paid ones.

Focus on getting people to link to your site by writing quality content they'd kill their own mothers to link to rather than buying links from other sites. If you're not good at writing killer Web copy (and let's face it, most of us aren't, otherwise we'd all be professional Web copywriters), go to your local bookstore or public library and get your hands on "Web Copy That Sells" by Maria Veloso.

Of course, reading the "All You Need to Know About SEO" thread linked in my signature will help too.

But when you think about it though, most of the "paid link sites" are short-term in nature and nothing better than link farms. If you're really going to buy a link from another site, would you rather buy one from a site that's related to yours and likely to be around for a while or some flash in the pan site that's going to stuff your link between a link to a viagra reseller and a concert ticket scalper which will probably be gone in a few weeks/months anyway?

these days when purchasing links...I try and get links in the middle of copy whenever possible....I try to stay away from links that are in a list to the left or right or in the footer....Just my way of being extra careful..

What makes you think a surge of backlinks in 24 hours denotes paid links?

It happens all the time, Digg effect or a news posting that gets people talking.

Honestly dont worry about the whole paid links fiasco, just keep promoting via multiple channels to diversify your link profile.

If you could cause a penalty by pointing dodgy backlinks to a domain then everyone would be doing it to their competitors, paid or unpaid. I don't think that google can penalize inbound links individually. It will penalize for a large number of poor quality inbound links as a factor in themselves or a large number of links from banned sites. Something far more important are outbound links, make sure that you only link out to good quality sites. One outbound to a poor quality or penalized site will leave you struggling for months until you work out why, believe me, it has happened on one of my sites!
