Are small free directories worth submitting to?

    Hi,
I am trying to get as many backlinks to my website as possible and i think submitting my site to as many directories as possible helps...

But what if the directories i am submitting it to are relatively small. I mean small compared to Dmoz, yahoo directory, etc. Do they still help or not?

If so, how much would they help you?

Well if I understand the way it works, it may help more depending on the PR and the number of links they have in the directory. The more links, the less PR you'll get.

Nearly all directories are smaller than Dmoz so you don’t really have a choice. To answer your question, I think there are better ways to get backlinks especially because most small directories end up failing and being deleted because they are very hard to monetize. Basically all your hard work down the drain :D

Well I'm not too bothered about the hard work as i pay someone to do it and at the end of the day it is free to submit it to the directories im submitting them too... but i just need to know how effective it is.

Say for example i submit it to 50 free small directories... would this be in any way equivalent to a directory listing to a big directory website like Yahoo! or Business.com?

If you are only submitting free listings in small directories, you will not lose anything in the end except a couple minutes of your time. If time is money, be selective. If you want a sure thing, pay for your positions in directories. Remember, just because a directory has a lot of listings does not mean you cannot have a better spot in that directory.

Just grabbing as many free or paid links as you can hoping for quality backlinks in the end will probably not produce the result you are looking for. You have to evaluate each directory on its own merits, just as each directory owner must evaluate each submissions own merits.

With free directories you are, to an extent, taking a lot of very small gambles with your time. A lot of the links will end up being worthless, but once in a while you get to submit for free to a directory that ends up turning paid and being heavily promoted.

Yeah many small startup ones go away in a year or so, but there is really nothing to lose and everything to gain. Todays small site may be tomorrows huge web directory.

Quality is quality in any market place, so if time is at a premium make sure that you are selecting Directories that are going to be online for the medium to long term

A 'shake Up' is well overdue in the Directory Sector and when that happens a lot of directories will either close or just fade away:)

This will be beneficial to the sector as it will represent a landmark timeline when the market progressed from being new & innovative to a mature value added stable marketplace:cool:

Invest in Quality and you will reap the benefits medium to long term

Many Directories have solid Page Ranks and are affordable, plus they are backed up by sustainable marketing & support programs

Those type of Directory are value for money:)
