    Normal HTML Site maps are useful for the viewers who r trying to locate any content in your website having some 5000 pages.
    Google uses XML Sitemaps to crawl deep into ur pages to look for search keywords...
    So....

    Sitemaps never make the site worse. It helps search engines crawl your site. Only thing is, you have to update it regularly.

    Sitemaps good, very good, it helps the visitors to understand the site structure and layout and quickly gain access to what your site has to offer.

    The use of Sitemap becomes doubly important if the site has pages that can only be accessed through user entry. Sitemap will assist web crawlers in finding and accessing the pages.Therefore all your pages are indexed by google so sitemap is good.

    sitemap is good because Sitemap are of two types one is HTML and next one is XML sitemap
    With the help of XML sitemap more number of web pages is index by search engine that way weight of website are going up and we find better search visibility for website with targeting keywords.

    A study by UC Berkley in 2009 (with special permission to Google data directly) showed that 77% of Google's pages were found first on a sitemap, then later by natural crawling. Simply stated, sitemaps can only be good.

    Those who experience bad results from sitemaps must be using poor sitemap tools or do not have their sitemaps cleaned of bad URLs... Whatever it is, there's more to the story of bad results from using sitemaps than simply using sitemaps.

    As per my knowledge sitemaps are good and also a free tool by Google, thrrough sitemap we can forward a request to Google to index all our website pages.

    In my opinion, the importance of sitemap for different sites is also different. for example, new sites, big sites with many pages, and sites need to update very often, a sitemap is urgently needed. and for small sites and no not need to update very often, a sitemap may relatively not so important. But all in all, own a sitemap is certainly do not have any harm for your site.
