Are search engines fighting their own battle to stay alive?

If the above statement is possible, What does mean to directories in general?

Many of us consider search engines as basic necessity and they will never go away as long as the internet exists. But, thinking this way we are perpetuating the status quo and creating a "dictatorship system".

Looking at the past, history tells us that planet was flat and earth was the center of the universe. Just a 100 years ago no one thought of new technologies or imagine what we have today.

Are search engines the best alternative to find what we are looking for or Is there better way that we don't know yet?

Why not discuss new ways to make directories "become all they can be". Is no longer about me or you is about improving directories in general. Let's share new ideas and don't let others factors (selfish) to stop you.

    Happy Halloween!!!

I guess until Web 3.0 evolves but then there will be a big shake down as that protocol will open up so many new options
    http://www.twine.com/
This will impact but has to run first before we know what it delivers

i'm just hoping that Yahoo, MSN & Ask will get their act together and give G a big wake-up call that the net is not theirs to control.

Personal references by acquaintances / friends will drive the next generation of search capabilities.

I love the way Ask advertise on british tv, they dont say a word, the advertisement is just there, few seconds, sinks in better than any funny song, crazy motto or forced down your throat tactic. :) Nice advertising.
