Comparing July '07 to July '08, I have had more impressions, but fewer clicks and lower average click value. The decrease in revenue is fairly small, but there is a noticeable drop.

Is it smarter consumers or consumers who don't have as much money to spend? I think it is the later, When you don't have money to spend, you don't pay as much attention to advertisements.

A thing that isn't mentioned much is the fact that you're not suppose to know when you click ads. You're suppose to think, it's an informative and related article. Especially with adsense, people on DP might click ads once in a while and not even realize it. Advertising will keep improving, I'm sure you could find articles like this from 03. Advertising needs to be more related and direct and give more stronger-related products, that would help a lot.

We all contribute to advertising revenue on a daily basis, if you take into consideration impressions, videos, good affiliation (adverting products), and all kinds of situations like that.

Look at full-page ads from adbrite. That is an innovative new technology, you might click "next page" really quick, but you're still going to notice the name associated with it.

You can even think of affiliation as a broader type of advertisement.

Good ads need to be able to have more customization. They all look the same, and I agree with a previous commenter that adsense is associated with horrible sites.

many industries are now setting up networks to block adds at work. It wouldn’t surprise me if some browsers start to block adds as standard (Microsoft could really hit a Google by doing this)

So as time goes by less and less people will even see the ads, we need more real competition to adsense that won’t be blocked as standard

I agree. I think Adsense ads are stale and in need of a facelift.

For me, it really depends on the ad. If it attracts the user, or the user's looking for it, then, why not. They'll click it.

in all my 3 years in Adsense there was a time when CTR was rising like a sharp arrow straight to heaven, but then came along the Adsense box accidental clicks removal and it went to hell like an arrow with a drug overdosed

    2005 -
    7%-8% CTR
    2006 -
    8%-10% CTR
    2007
    1%-3% CTR

    and 2008
    0.68%-1% CTR

what's surprising though is that my amount of clicks stayed the same since I have started to moved on to making 100+ sites but the over all values of clicks dropped through the years

    2005 -
    average clicks were 0.45cents

    2006 -
    average clicks were 0.32cents

    2007 -
    average clicks were 0.15cents

    2008 -
    average clicks is now 0.08cents

I believe that it is adsense publisher´s fault. Because there are millions of adsense publishers and they already talked about their ads with family and friends. If someone knows about adsense then they will never click on any ads on any website.

In terms of the month of July, I made less than half in July 2008 what I made in July 2007 although my impressions were higher in 2008.

Correct, but more to the point - Make money online blogs are one of the main "culprits" if not the main "culprit." All those teaching the masses how to earn from Adsense. Yes, so many bloggers are a "noble" lot, but this is ultimately hurting all publisher's bottom line.

The amount of traffic to these blogs is tremendous, and the return is not as good as what it should be, yet people continue making make money online blogs. The net effect is -> this is shortening the lifespan of Adsense for everyone.

You're forgetting that most of the increase in population is in poor countries. These people will not be buying anything from the internet. Things wont be changing for a long time. And their clicks are usually worth $0.01.

As for developed countries, it's the kids that are becoming net savvy. At a younger (and younger) age....They will learn even faster than clumsy old adults, what is an Adsense ad and what is not. And they won't be clicking.

So in summary, this kind of thinking is flawed at its core. People always think that traffic is inexhaustible, just like they used to regard petroleum oilfields...but this was the kind of thinking that dried up the oilfields in the end.

Everything in this world is finite or has its limitations in some way or the other.

No, but there are more ad blockers these days. People are also becoming banner blind.

It's best to slide contextual ads right into your content whenever you can.

great comments, and you are right, I see alot of people that think that adsense is some kind of infinite money source that will always be there and all we have to do is create some sites and work on them and the traffic will get better and google will pay us.... there have been many cycles to the internet in the past where everyone started making money and then almost overnight it goes to zero and everything changes

the internet as we know it today is guaranteed to change alot as the years go by
