Are paid directories worth it?

LOL. I hear that's one of Google's most frequent searches too.

What exactly is a "free animal club"? Is it a place free animals hang out after hours, or what they carry when they get in a gang fight with free plants and shrubs?

Some of them worth it. You must compare their PR/price ratio. Submit your website to the highest valued directories. From my experience, i can tell you that Yahoo! and BOTW are worth its price. You should check the others. You can see the list of web directories and sort them whatever you want on this directory list. But you can not see the price of directories there. You must check them manually.

There is no such thing as free lunch, free directories are also paying for domain name registration and hosting account, these things doesn’t come freely. The key here is the traffic, because it’s free, with proper promotion, a huge amount of visitors can be obtained.

Free directories acquire compensation from Web site submissions by acquiring the email addresses of webmasters to promote certain services or products (not all of them), by earning through advertising programs like AdSense, by getting sponsors and advertisers etc.

Well for me using paid directories are worth it.

Ah, that is very good question. Let me try to explain to you in a simplest possible way I can.
You see there are some clubs that has been charging membership fees. You don’t want to go there.
Then, there are clubs where you can be a member and that won’t cost you a penny and that is why
people call them: free animals clubs

I myself was astonished when Google’s search spewed out 14,000,000 results.
Yeap, it looks like people love freebies

It depends on your website needs, many directories require you to pay even their PR is 0 or 1. Sometimes I don't think it's worth

    $400.00 for 2 backlinks???
I doubt if that makes any sense given you can get the same 2 backlinks for free.

Great explanation. Purely fictional of course, but great. Anyone that runs the search mentioned will quickly see why. Try finding "free animal clubs" in the results. LOL. Good effort though.

If you came up high for the search "wounded badger in my pants" I'm sure the explanation of how that illustrated Amray's superiority coulda been even more entertaining.:)

Many paid directories are overpriced, there are a few where cost/benefit is good. Imo anything over 6$ per link is overpriced, you can get sitewides on PR3 sites (targeted niche) for that sum.

Wounded badger in your pants. Really?
Oh man, if I was you, Google’s search results would be least of my worries,
I would seek medical attention and visit doctor immediately.

Now, you be careful and use protection next time you’re hanging around
animal clubs, free or paid. You hear me cowboy?

I'm not sure you are comparing apples to apples here. What are the "results" that you speak of and what do you find the "same" about them? Listing in a crappy pay directory can have the same affect as listing in a crappy free directory. However, I do not believe listing in a high quality pay directory has the same affect as listing in even the best of the the free directories out there.

Paid directories are worth it, but it is hard to convince the squeaky webmasters that submit to countless .info dud free directories as their entire offpage seo strategy! As long as you know what the good paid directories are (the ones that will be around 5 years from now and carry Google's trust), they are a great investment.

I honestly think that paid directories are a waste of time. Who's to say that a paid directory provides anymore quality or relevance than a free one? The quality of a directory shouldn't be judged by the fee to get a link there, but rather, if it really provides any actual benefits to your site.

I don't think any are worth it. First, even if you get more views, is it coming from viewers that you want? if you're trying to sell something, you don't want some farmers in India seeing your blog/website. Secondly, you could gain just as much viewers through outside advertising or advertising on other sites, blogs, and forums.

If you want a quick way to get good pr and traffic, pay for a listing in yahoo directory. This is not an extreme example either. Paying for a listing in any of the top sites that have directories is worthwhile, because people will and so search for what they want on some of the top directories around.

The real question is, Is paying for a directory listing worth it to you. You are the only one that can make that decision. If you are marketing a real product, a paid listing, in a good directory may be the best money you ever spent.

I'd say it depends how popular the paid directories are, there are a lot of good free ones out there.

IMO Yahoo directory is the only paid one that worth the investment.
