Are "one-way" backlinks on irrelevant websites better than two-way reciprocal links?

Spamming the system? I highly doubt you're correct there. You don't have control when somebody recommends your website to somebody else through forums, blogs, etc. If I was Google I could see how that could help determine the importance of a website. Exchanging links with other websites is more like spamming the system and is not natural. So far Google hasn't admitted whether or not that will help your website so all we have to go on is speculation.

My personal opionion is that the 500 one way links would be more beneficial than the related recipricol links. Google does not like recipricol links. If you want to increase the SEO of your site you should try and locate do follow, one way links to your site.

    Greg,

You could try 3 way links. they are harder to find out and they are easier to get. maybe someone more experienced than me can shed some light on it.

But I would go for 3 way linking, rather than reciprocal.
