Rebranded TLDS - .ME, .TV, .CC Rebranded TLD's are all the rage these days with the recent successful campaign for .ME and the infamous Demand Media and .TV names. Many oportunities for great names have become open for websites who cant quite find the ideal .COM. But what are some of the considerations when choosing one of these names as the home for your business. Seach Engines In my experience, search engines including google dont respect the new "branding for ccTLDs", so you are a few steps behind when starting an SEO campaign for a site using .TV or .ME names. The .COM, and .NET counterparts seem to do far better on search engines, although this can not be verified officialy, it is something to consider if you want to stay competative. Brand Recognition Many people (your customers) will not be familiar with .ME or .TV and they may not have the same trust for your site. This is especially true with .CC and other obscure domain extentions. Many people are on high alert for security when they surf and they may not like the looks of a strange domain name. Having said that I suspecct that .TV and .ME are both on their way to be generally accepted, but they are fully not there yet. Lost Traffic If you create a site like sitename.me, you are likely going to lose traffic to: sitename.com, sitename.me.com, sitenameme.com Marketing Personally I feel that these names provide a great opportunity for a marketable and professional name, but sometimes before you jump into this market, you might want to check out the .COM aftermarket If you are willing to spend a little. A dot com will always trump these other wanna-bes. Also, Keep in mind that your local country code will be ideal for both Search Engines and branding for you local marketing. Im in canada so I choose .CA names well before .ME or .TV Selling Getting .TV and .ME names to flip or to try to make some easy money is going to be a lot harder than you think. Although many people do make money in this way, it takes years of experience and a lot of creativity and luck to make this work. I have some of these names in my portfolio and I am proud to own them. But I never look at it as a get-rich-quick scheme.
