Are NoFollow Backlinks Really Backlinks?

    Hi all,

I would like to know if in fact NoFollow Backlinks are really Backlinks and if they have any actual SEO value other then referral traffic that may click on them?

For instance, if I trade or buy a PR-7 backlink to my site and it has a NoFollow tag, is it still going to help my pagerank and my keywords the same as if it had a DoFollow tag?

Should I insist my backlinks tha are DoFollow or should I not even worry about it?

I want to make sure these backlinks help my keywords in the searps more then just what referral traffic may click on that backlink, if you know what I mean.

    Thanks everyone.

    Thanks

If I understand that right, If I have a bog then the nofollow works in my favor for the links on my site but not so good for the backlinks linking back to my site?

    Is that right?

Yes that is the simple version : If you are linking out to a site other than yours then using Nofollow attribute will make sure you don't lose link juice and the reverse is also true, when you are getting links from other sites to your sites, try to make sure that the links are not nofollow.

In the case of Google, nofollow links are actual backlinks. I haven't been able to experiment much with the rest of search engines in regard to this.

You are not getting the point!
Nofollow links are treated differently by different search engines, see the URL I mentioned in my first reply to understand which SE values the nofollow link and which don't !!

They don't have any SEO value but still they do bring readers to your site.

I understand that, but when you are trading or buying a PR 7 link mainly for its SEO value and it has a nofollow tag it seems like a bad deal.

I think it depends on the type of link.

When you buy a blogroll link on PR7 website, for example, you'd better insist on dofollow. As for some social bookmarking sites or twitter, for example, links from these websites are nofollow, but I don't think that there's no sense to have them. In my view they definitely work coz they are natural links.

No follow backlinks are not counted by Google but other search engines take nofollow backlinks also.

    A link is a link.

Nofollow backlinks will helps you in getting website traffic and SERP ranking and a Dofollow links will helps you to get PR, SERP ranking, traffic and so on.

and as google is the overwhelming largest visited search engine, then its rules are most important for most people.

The other thought is if google treats live links and non live links on your site the same? Sure people cant click on the non live link, meaning that they are more likely to stay on your site, but will Google still leak the juice from your site if the link is not live?
