Are niche directories profitable?

I have own general directories for years and have very well. Several years ago, I set up a financial directory. Results business wise have been poor.

A general audience is interested in general directories. Has anyone here made money with a niche directory?

Mod- my mistake- please move to "Directories"

Finance is really a big niche. Unfortunately many general directories bury it deep.

I can't find any good directory in this niche. Your financial directory doesn't generate good profit because there're lots of room to improve.

Check dir.yahoo.com, business.com and botw.org, financial categories are among the most crowded ones. It's definitely a lucrative niche. However building a quality financial directory is a big challenge.

I have two niche directories. Both have flopped and the only reason I am keeping them alive is because I plan to find other means of monetising them in the future. From a personal perspective, niche directories are useless business-wise. I make ten times more money from a general directory than a niche one.

"I can't find any good directory in this niche. Your financial directory doesn't generate good profit because there're lots of room to improve."

Interesting. I don't think you know what site I'm talking about but yes there is lots of room for improvement.

"I make ten times more money from a general directory than a niche one."

Me too, maybe 30 times more. Bottom line is that it is not worth selling the site or converting it to another purpose- I may as well make it the best financial directory that I can.

    Hi Louis,

I of course know your directory and have made several submissions.

Thank you for your business DragonGuy. The niche directory I was referring to was alifeoutofdebt.com, a financial directory. Not my general directory cannylink.com. Thanks for the feedback on this thread but let's end it here since it should be listed under the main Directory cat, not announcements- my mistake.

Finance is a really big niche directory, also combine that with the fact that Google has delimited the value of directory submitted links and that puts you really down, so you should stick to a more general niche
