Are my mail-out (email) response rates ok?

I have recently sent out an email to 1150 contacts from a client's customer database asking them if they want to enrol to their soon to be launched ezine.

My boss is far from happy with the response!

We had about 150 bounced back to us. I suspect that a few more would have been blocked but didn't send a bounce message as I did not ask the client to add our SMTP server to there SFP record (they actually don't have an SPF record).

So out of the possible 1000 delivered:
    • 27% emails were viewed as I can see the header was downloaded (I suspect a lot more would have been read without downloading the images as it was perfectly readable without)
    • 18% overall response (9% yes and 9% no)

These figures may still rise slightly tomorrow.

I have run the email through a SPAM assessor, it came out very clean (0.3 out of 16). The only thing that I would have done different would have been to ask the client to set their SPF record, but this is something that I have only just learned about.

Now while I'm not particularly over the moon with these figures I think that they are about right? Have any of you guys had any experience with these sorts of mail outs. If so can you confirm if these figures are reasonable or not?
