Are meta tags still useful?

I've read over recent weeks in forums such as this one, that meta tags are no longer useful in a website...I beg to differ, but would love to hear other members' opinions on this subject. :)

    They are still useful.

META keywords, even if not used by Google, is still used by some SE. So it will not hurt to keep it (without stuffing)

META description is useful if unique on each page, it can prevent duplicate content and supplemental results.

And if used as a snippet in SERPs, it can improve the CTR.

Great explanation! Thanks Monty. I heard about the dupe and supplemental results.

And yeah, the snippet, thanks for the heads up :D

I have heard to that they are no longer needed if you plan out your site well and use good well constructed content.

My self I have never ever used them but many of my sites rank high on most search engines under a number of key words, so I don't see the point in me changing my method, seems to work for me.

Until someone comes up with a miracle to get there site to the top of a search engine, I'm still sat waiting.

Yeah meta is very important, especially if the site is aged and in many smaller search engines that still run it. Removing the meta tags would cut your site from their listings..
