Are meta tags necesary?

Do people even use them anymore?

 

Some people say no. I still put them in. It only takes a minute to make them so why not use them.

 

I think they do work. However, I only use description and keywords.

 

Imo they have very very little effect but I use them at least they don't have negative effect.

I don't thin they have any effect on SEO but it is used most of the time for the description when your site is shown in the serps

 

Meta Tags are necessary.

 

I mainly use title and description and noodp tags. NoODP = No DMOZ description on google, which means it uses your description, so make it nice, and the title is extremely important. But don't overdo it.

If I see in google these results:

1) Blue Widget Red Widget Green Widget Purple Widget Yellow Widget Widget Widget
2) Best information about all kinds of Widgets.

I would click on #2 as #1 looks like spam. This is pretty much for AFTER you appear in the SE's, getting people to go to your site.

 

IMO meta description tag is imp. for SEO and it is still taken into consideration by many SE's......

 

Ofcourse its necessary its give a meaning to your site... when somebody search on google about anything your site displays if there could not be any description how would people know that what you have it in your website...

METATAG is necessary even if you are writing only Keywords and description. They provide matter to search engine to rank sites. They describe keyword to robots.

meta tags are necessary in case of yahoo and msn.com but i think it has no longer value in google.com for serp.

 

Meta tags are the heart of the SEO, To get on the top in SERP you need to have to do on page optimization with meta tags.

Must have tag:

• Meta keyword
• Meta Description
• and the title tag

If meta tags were the heart of SEO, then surely everyone would agree they are important.

Meta keywords should collaborate with keywords within the content of the page.

 

what Search engines considers important is not known to anyone for sure ... people only guess . It is a widely known assumption that SE's devalues Keywords meta tags totally , Meta Description tag is not directly responsible for any SE ranking - but as all good seo guru would tell you , half of current day seo is making your website upto certain standards . And a standards compliant / good framed HTML page requires you to use the meta tags .

 

I agree with PadraigCurran.

 

ALWAYS use Meta Description, as this is what Google shows in the SERP's. This is your chance to make your listing more inviting to click on, compared to the other 9 sites on the Google search page.

If you don't use Meta Description, Google will just grab content off your page to display.. Which could end up being your navigation text etc.

Meta Keywords, don't mean much to Google but use them anyway as other engines still rely on them.

Meta Description and page Title are the two important elements.
