Are Longer or Shorter Articles Best?

I frequently find myself writing posts ending up 1300-1500 words long, which are pretty big posts (I think). Normally I try to write between 500-650 at most. What do you think is a good length for blog articles?

I don't think it's any secret that Google likes longer articles, but you're not writing for Google- You're writing for the reader.

So, while longer articles are much more thorough and generally better reads, shorter articles are easier reads. If you're looking to draw a lot of people in, I think it would be best to stick to < 700 words.

Keep it short, sweet, and stick to your point.

It's also important to note that longer articles require a flair for writing. Long, boring articles, while informative, will scare off many potential readers. If they read the first line and don't like the style, chances are they won't put in the added effort to finish.

I think it depends. If you are writing to get an audience then long posts are good since you may have many keywords throughout your post and those keywords can boost your rankings a bit.

Writing for adsense. Long post would not be good since the interest would be focused on the post rather than the ads.

    My two cents.

What is better 25 french fries or 36?

You write whatever makes sense to the reader.

I try to keep my writing within a 8.5"x11" format... try to keep scrolling to a minimum.

I prefer to write longer post to gain seo advantage. However, to make it readable, I use big font, short paragraph and some subheadings.

I don't pay much attention when I'm writing a blog post-just keep it interesting and on-topic! It's always quality over quantity you know!

It depends on the post, really. 1000+ words is a bit excessive though IMO

Even though content is king...you should write for your readers. It also depends on what you are writing. If you are writing a general article without images, keep it to around 500 words. If you are writing a tutorial or how to piece, then write until you have explained the process. When you are done, proofread to see if there are steps that you can shorten and make more concise. If you are writing a list...like 99 WordPress Plug-Ins...write until you have finished. Use subheadings and maybe even a few pictures. Proofread and see if you can make it more concise.

Readers are going to scan regardless to find the information that they want. Make it easy for them to do that. When I worked as a technical writer, my editor requested that we use as many bulleted lists as possible. Readers are more engaged by content that is broken down for easy reading. Go with your gut...what would you want to read? How much time do you have to spend reading?

The bottom line is that Google also likes new content...so write for your readers and you can't go wrong.

around 350 words, that is for average articles.
but sometimes, 500 or more words are needed to explain your meaning.
Anyway, make your ideas clear and concise, and readable to readers, that is it!

There shouldn't be a fixed length for the post. There should be a balance of words to getting your point through and enough key words to catch google's eyes!

As a reader rather than a writer, I think it's about getting the point across succinctly. If you start to waffle - and I'm a great waffler - I'm probably going to lose interest. Keep to the point and 350 - 500 words is about my limit of reading, unless it's something really interesting.

If you find yourself writing 1500 words, then you can put that content to better use. Break it down into three articles around 400-600 words each. Then post each one (could use scheduled posts on Wordpress to give yourself a break!)

Use a related posts plugin and then each post will get a relevant internal link. Your readers will then move on to the next post. Plus Google will notice you have a number of posts on a topic, which should boost your SERPs.
