Are links from "dropped sites" a bunch of junk?

I saw some links for sale --- on this forum

Many of the websites appear to be dropped PR6 etc. websites...... that someone picked up

Even though they have high authority..... does Google downgrade these sites to junk once theyre dropped?

How can you tell what paid links are good links?

    I wouldn't say "a bunch of junk", but don't treat them as a PR6.

How do you know if a site has been "dropped"?

Mismatch between domain name and content is the main way you can tell from the link sales on here. So something like ilovefluffylittlekittens.com shouldn't be a forex blog, for example.

When you say 'dropped sites' you mean expired domains?
If so, I am pretty sure their PageRank gets reset to 0 by Google.

Check the backlinks in yahoo site explorer. If the backlinks are about a different subject, then it's a dropped domain.
