Are lie detectors accurate?

On TV they are glamorated and showed to be 100% accurate. But I've heard they are closer to 80% accurate, (10% shown lying when honest or 10% showing honest when lying). IT kind of worries be because we tend to treat them as gospel.

I know that Lie-detector tests are not admissible as evidence in U.S. courts.

polygraphs are far from perfect. In fact, many experts consider them a farce, and almost all scientists who have studied them (and even some polygraph administrators) understand that polygraphs are seriously limited.

On TV they claim so many things that are untrue in reality.
Something that works 100%? Even cars (a technology older than 100 years) is not 100% working. Even they break down once in a while.

A lie detector may be right more than 50%, but far from 100%
