    There is a reason why people pay $$$$ to gain exclusive rights to photographs.

    dont listen to these guys, they dont know anything, ill tell you what you wanted to hear, if you find images on google, or any other domain for that matter, they are considered (legal term) "Public Domain" which means you can use them for anything you want. keep the Interweb free :) you have any problems with the authorities, refer them to this post.

    I heard that if you customize the images into your own artwork then its considered legal. Can anyone confirm?

    If the copyright owner gives you permission to do so then you can modify the images. If not then you are breaking the law. There are VERY simple options:

    - Get written permission from the copyright holder.
    - Use Creative Commons licensed images that allow what you need
    - Use public domain images
    - Take your own
