PHPbb will have a lot of spam if you don't add modifications. MyBB is very good it is the free vBulletin and it is pretty secure I love it.

phpBB HAS BEEN a steaming pile of crap prior to 3.0 - as such (and from what I've seen of the code that went into it) I'd not even CONSIDER trusting 3. Their raging hardon for 10px and smaller text is bad, and I don't think they even know what good coding is, much less even HEARD of things like accessability norms. The whole 'nevernosanity' nonsense taking down a third of the web was the nail in the coffin in my EVER trusting it for ANYTHING - yeah, but it was Turdpress that won a pwnie - right.

I like SMF (simple machines), though myBB looks ok too. punBB is a bit like a cherry, sweet on the outside and inside it's the pits (the code is a train wreck)

I use SMF on a ... well, I guess you could call it a hobby site - if the official website of Classic Battletech (the pen and paper game from the 80's) can be called a hobby site. Easy installation, and it handles the 50,000 page views and 1,200 posts a day just fine. http://www.classicbattletech.com/forums/

Aye, I'd go with MyBB or SMF. MyBB definitely has more features, but SMF if you like it. PunBB is terrible - if you are going to go something simple, I'd take Vanilla or Phorum.

All of these scripts are more than suitable for massive forums, as well. And since they are more lightweight they tend to handle it better than the big paid ones.

Sun is a multi-billion dollar company, and they still use Phorum - a tiny little script - to power the MySQL support forums.

A few other examples of big boards using free scripts:
    MyBB:
Official MsgPlus Support forum - 76500 members
    NCAAbbs - 23 000 members - Hobby site, I suppose.

    SMF
    Official SMF Support - 150 000 members
    Liverpool FC - 30 000 members

If you ask me, it's fine but it's better to have phpBB.

I would say phpBB, not becuase it offers loads of features, but mainly a hobby forum might want to have hacks and plugins and it has loads.

if you check out big forums list of world's largest and most popular forums, you will see that vast majority run on phpbb. If that script can support world's largest forums, you know that your hobby site will be well taken care of.

Furthermore, phpbb is the only forum script that uses tableless css for design. Enough said....

Just because prior to 3.0 that was the only way to bring it UP to the level of functionality of the WORST of it's competitors... of course hacking and modding can easily nueter your upgrade path leading to EXACTLY the type of HELL that took down a third of the web just a few years back with NeverNoSanity - where the patch to prevent it had been out to months but most sites couldn't upgrade from the version they installed because the hacks they 'needed' or had made themselves prevented upgrading - BRILLIANT.

Which just proves how stupid some people are. Popular doesn't make it any good or even reliable. Between the garbage coding practices and security holes big enough to said the USS IOWA through...

Since 3.0 - problem is they are NOT using tables for tabular data, instead abusing a definition list - WAY TO GO. (dumbasses). It's ok to use a table for TABULAR DATA - like the main board index or a sub-forum index. Abusing a definition list and then filling it with non-semantic tags is actually semantically INCORRECT.... Especially with multiple DD per DT AND abusing the DFN tag too. - ****ing brilliant.

What's worse than non-semantic markup? Incorrectly using tags with meanings on the wrong things. /FAIL/.

But then I'd not trust the folks behind phpBB to code their way out of piss soaked paper bag with a hole in the bottom.
