Do free quality or high PR directories still help serp and how does google know that you got in for free vs. choosing pay inclusion option?

I can't answer the second question, but concerning the first — remember, the internet is all about links to content. Therefore, at the "macro" level, the search engines will always have respect for good links.

How much does a free directory link add? Only the search engine algorithm people know for sure. But again, a free directory does provide a (usually) reputable link. And it's not simply a PageRank issue, because the other search engines don't issue PageRanks.

I submit several times a week to free directories. That has made a significant contribution to my website's 20,000 inbound links. That seems to have been rewarded in the SERPs, as about two dozen keywords now show up on Google's first page. (I track KWs with 25 or more daily searches, per WordTracker.)

    Yes
    >how does google know that you got in for free vs. choosing pay inclusion option?
They can check your position, but I doubt they will...

I still see them as a source of quality backlinks so in my opinion, yes, it is definitely worth getting good directory links.

There is a high mortality rate among new, free directories. But some of them do go forward to become good-quality, paid directories with good PR. Keep submitting. You never know — that new, free directory of today may one day become one of your best backlinks.

The problem with these directories is that you often end up on a page with PR0. This is the case even with a PR7 directory!

I have a site which is listed on 5000+ directories. Paid a nice indian fella to do it for me.

But after 6 months, my site is stil PR1. :(

By webmasters reporting a site or link as a paid link. Which is why it is not a good idea to post live links, cloaked links, or indicate the address of the site you are selling a link to, in a public forum such as this (or on sites dedicated to link selling).

Free Directories still hold value in link building because it helps to provide your site more backlinks and traffic and greater online exposure. Just be sure to submit your site in web directories that have good quality and high PR.

I don't believe in free directories anymore... As I tested it myself, I submitted my site to 500 free directories before with 479 accepted and listed.. I keep on monitoring for 4 months now but still there are only 16 active backlinks to those sites...

For me, most effective backlinks that crawled by google is articles and forum posts plus blog comments..

Imagine if your site is listed on the 3rd category of a link directory where the page has no PR, then your site might not be noticed by google bot..

    Just my 2 cents

I think I agree with Silveraden. I notice I had a few backlinks from free directories, but now they are all gone. I don't know why... but I've not delete their links in my sites.
