Are forums link farms

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by webcosmo, Aug 6, 2008.

Forum pages got quite a few links on each thread from the sigs and such. And most of them are are not related. Considering the difinition of link farm forums would be a link farm.

    Any thoughts?

    No.
But this is super debatable and an excellent question.
    1. A link farm is random links with very little text, maybe a few hundred per page
    2. A forum is usually a PHP script, and I am sure that G would realize this
    3. They just count for zero, rather than be a negative or else I would have my competitors in my sig rather than the Guy from Freelancer who ripped me off

Really? Do you have any proof to support your claim?

We are just discussing if forums would be considered as link farms. I am myself trying to learn about this issue.

i dont think so. forum is a community where people come and discuss various topics. lot of fresh contents get added on a regular basis. link farms are pretty much static sites with ton of links in them.

    Sigh...
Well for a start if we are going to proove this......you are going to need to display your hypertext anchor rather than just your url!

Forums can be seen as link farms if there are a hella load of external links -_- maybe if its in the hundreds++

I best bet would be to limit it 4 links per sig.

You have just displayed poor knowledge...

2... What has the fact that forums are coded in PHP got to do with linkfarms? A link farm is a completely seperate concept, they are unrelated. I could create a forum right now with PHP and put a link farm smack-bang in the middle.

3... They definitely do NOT count for 0. Trading with link farms can DEFINITELY have a negative effect on your site.

My thoughts is that putting your sites in your sig on an old and trusted forum like Digital Point will be beneficial. But perhaps and a fairly new forum google may see it as spammy and linkfarm-like.

I've seen a lot of threads/posts saying that having a bunch of backlinks from the DP forums has helped their site get a high SERP placing.

However, now that you mention it, I did once have an experience where a backlink from a forum seemed to hurt my SERP ranking. I noticed that a forum thread was outranking me for a keyword (not one I was really targeting though) so I tried replying to the thread with a backlink to my page (with the keyword as the anchor text, of course). When Google re-crawled the thread and added my backlink, my page's SERP ranking for the keyword actually fell by a spot.

Of course, this alone isn't really definitive proof that the backlink hurt me.

a max of 8 sig links can be seen on any given page here at Digital point with 4 sigs/post.

Though, with 20 posts per page there is a pretty good chance of having content which should certainly help in making each link a bit more valuable.

Down in BST though I bet the sig links don't hold as much weight with all the "PM me" and "I'll sell mine for $23" type posts...

Report one of their posts and the mods will look into it.

I don't think Google's algorithm really knows the difference between the two.

If there are excessive spam links on any forum, it will lose its rankings too.

Forums manage to avoid penalities as they have lot of content and outgoing spam links are limited in number.

Many social bookmarking sites (without nofollow) are more closer to link farms than forums.

You aren't exactly in a position to mock or abuse anyone considering the absolute stupidity of your first post.

"Google will know DP is php, OBVVVVVVVVVViously..." Haha!

Now hush your beak you petty imbecile.

Since there is so much content on the forums, I don't think its a link farm.
